ok so my baby is stil a long way ffrom being born! but hubby and i have always wanted to drive to darwin, the alice and uluru, and think that maybe while on maternity leave is the best option... My question is at what age do u think it is safe to take a baby on a long road trip? (we camp and will use a camper trailer for this trip...)
When would it be ok to start camping with a baby?
we've done heaps of travelling with our babies, from a very young age, as long as you make sure you have plenty of stops for feeds etc, bubs should be fine. if you're going through the nt in summer though, you need to be careful about the wet season, you so don't want to get stuck in their crazy floods with a baby, and i'd probably just get a good mozzie net for baby. we got a little mozzie tent for our kids tht is put out by jolly jumper.. baby lies in it like a little tent but is covered by a very strong net, perfect for a newborn.

driving they were less than one month, flying they were 5 months...
I would think that having a toddler now, a Road Trip would have been a LOT easier when she was much younger!! lol
Newbornish would be perfect I would have thought...
Travelling with Charlotte now requires stopping every couple of hours for a decent amount of time so she can get out of the car and a lot of energy trying to keep her happy and entertained whilst driving.

I know babies who camped at 9 days old... If you're organised, I don't see why not.
BIL was telling us on the weekend how we could kiss godbye any hopes of cycling Sydney to Melbourne, or around France when the baby comes, but we know people who do it. He and his family couldn't; they travel with too much junk. But a lot of people can. And do. I've even heard stories of people doing it with cloth nappies.

We did it in 06 and my youngest was 8 months old
I think camping can be done as soon as you want to be honest. The earliest we took our kids camping was about 6 months but that was due to work and school commitments
With going to the Nt I would be careful of the weather more then anything. I know I wouldn't go in summer and in winter (when we are going) its going to be cold. uluru is getting down to 1 most nights.. Whereas Darwin is still in the range we are used to here (15-30)

we went to Melbourne with DD (drive down) when she was 5 months old ... earlier than that would have been better as at 5 months she got very tired of the car seat very quickly and being rear facing it was just plain frustrating for her. She is now 10 months and is a bit easier to manage in the car but again gets bored very very quickly with the car seat and any toys to occupy her ... i honestly think the younger the better, esp in rear facing capsules ....
