Baby lotion recommendations for very dry scratchy cheeks

Hi All - Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a good cream for very dry skin. DD is 7 months old, is currently teething and has permanently bright red cheeks but they are also very dry and scratchy almost like sandpaper. She is drooling a lot and putting her hands in her mouth and over her cheeks which isn't helping the situation.

I bath DD in GAIA and originally used the GAIA mosturiser which didn't help and have also used the new organic range from the Bodyshop and another organic brand called Natural Instinct - none of which have made any improvement at all - Oh and I have also recently even switched my laundry detergent to Amolin but it hasn't seemed to have helped much either - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I always try something plain and unscented in the first instance, like sorbolene. If that doesn't work, I apply her usual nappy cream. We use Amolin cream because it's really thick and it seems to protect and soothe at the same time. My eldest DD (who is 11) is sometimes prone to dry skin rashes and I have found the Amolin to work really well for those.

This might sound strange but you could try olive oil. It's not expensive (you may already have some in the kitchen anyway) and it leaves a protective barrier on the skin to lock in moisture. Plus it doesn't matter if she puts her hands in and around her mouth. If it doesn't work you can always cook the rest of it!

Try Aromababy "barrier balm" or Aromababy "Pure Baby moisture cream".

Aveeno and Cetaphil are very good...from the pharmacy. They are not marketed to babies but that doesn't mean you can't use them...I've used them on both of my babies on the recommendation from the pharmacist who also used them on her babies. Brilliant.

I would be putting her on some probiotic 'friendly bacteria' (baby biotics - avail from health food stores and pharmacies). It comes in a powder from and you can just add some to her milk.
Skin conditions such as this usually are a sign of something going on inside - usually with the digestive tract. The skin is the largest organ of elimination, and irritation can be a sign that the internal organs of elimination (liver, kidneys, bowel etc) are not functioning optimally.
For topical use, have you tried Miessence babycare? This is a certified organic range - brands such as Natural Instinct are not certified organic and they still contain some irritating chemicals. Any brand can advertise as being 'organic' - even when they are not. There is no current law which governs this. If you want a product that is truely organic, you need to look for the certifying logo from an established certifying association, such as NAASA, ACO or BFA. I second moogoo - their MSM cream is the best!

i used to use sorbolene with vitamin e but got some moogoo the one for eczema and psorisasis. i want to get the MSM cream but it is only sold in one shop which is a distance away now that we have moved and i dont want to pay the p&h with online order.. boo hoo!

Thanks so much everyone for all of your recommendations - I will def try some of these out - JellyBean - thanks for the info on products being Certified Organic - I had no idea :redface:- when I see organic on a label I have just assumed it is without any harsh chemicals - you've opened my eyes up and I will now read labels a lot more carefully!!

ds has the same thing going on and i am using paw paw ointment - its working great and he has super sentive skin :)
