How to be under the care of a specialist

Hi everyone,

DP and I have decided to try for our first at the end of the year. We would like to be under the care of a specialist. We have heard that if the specialist has not seen us before,there is a chance that they may turn us down when we request to be in their care.

I guess how do we see the specialist prior TTC so that we know we have the specialist in mind looking after us?

Do I make an appointment with the GP for a paps smear and at the same time get a referral to the specialist? or should the paps smear be conducted by the specialist?

What other tests are recommended and is this carried out by the GP or the specialist?

Very excited to be in this phase of our lives. Would like to do all the ground work now so that when the time comes we can enjoy the experience. TIA

You are probably best going through your GP and asking him/her for a referral.

You might be better booking into a obstetrician. Which is normally done as soon as you find out you are pregnant.

I didn't see a specialist for my first pregnancy and only 1/2 way through my second pregnancy did I need to see a Fetal specialist. This pregnancy I am under a Fetal specialist but only until 20 weeks if all goes well. I transferred hospitals and still had trouble getting in

I suggest going to see your GP first. You'll find that a specialist (if you are referring to a fertility specialist) won't see you until you have been trying for some time (depending on your age).

I think that your GP is a good person to start with as they can do all of your rubella tests and other pre-natal testing and then recommend a specialist should you require it.

Get yourself and DH Elevit and Menevit, they are the really good pre-conception multi vitamins and are recommended when TTC.

I'd also suggest acupuncture, it has really helped me through this TTC journey.
