How many bumps to the head are too many?

OK, before DHS has a fit, I'm not abusing my child!!! :p

Its just that Peter seems unusually prone to bumping his head. Or maybe its usual- I have no idea, having no experience with a 13 month old. I swear he does it at least once everyday, sometimes more. For example, he knows how to climb the couch and he also knows how to get down backwards- most of the time. But sometimes he will perform an illegal dismount and fall and bump his head on the floor (wood). Or just generally topple over trying to stand/walk etc. He always cries like the world is ending, but its over really quickly and there doesn't seem to be any lasting issues.

But I remember reading that while a little knock to the head isn't any big deal, repeated knocks are not such a great thing.

Do I need to get him one of those helmet things, or is this normal kid behaviour unlikely to cause any permanent damage?

Gee whiz, I hope there is no such thing as too many knocks to the head - my boys do it all the time! I really don't know hun but I think to a certain extent it's normal. My boys truly don't even notice half the time - the adults watching all draw in breath and cringe and DS just continues on like nothing's happened :doh:

When my sons were a toddlers they were always bumping their heads. They're still pretty top heavy at that age I don't think that helps the situation.
DS2 was especially prone to it a few trips to the hospital prone! I thought for sure at hosp visit #3 with him when he was 2 we would get investigated, but they seemed to understand that he was just a toddler:D
He's 15 and now no permanent brain damage:p

My DS is a total unco. He is always falling over and the head usually is the thing he bumps. But now he just picks himself up, rubs the spot, might have a little tear to himself, and keeps playing. He had a phase where he had a "egg" on his forehead and the "egg" kept getting bumped... but it has finally gone down. I know it hurts when he runs to me for cuddles...

i hear ya.. im worried about Mia too. Shes always hitting her head (tiled floors).

Yeah Maya's always whacking her head on the floor (wood), walls, chairs, anything really. I sometimes worry about how many brain cells she's killing. :doh:

oh gosh, since Ash bangs his head on the floor boards around 4 times a day, I hope there is no such thing as too many lol

My boys are the same. Its a boy thing to get more than one a day, I swear. Small bumps are just that. Lots of bigger ones (egg lump with bruising bumps) would be more worrisome.

With each bump though, what you need to pay attention to is how long it takes for him to cry. If there is an unnatural delay between bang and wah - then its best to get him checked out by a doctor. If its quick but the result is visible, keep him awake and alert for an hour.

Otherwise, you have a perfectly healthy and normal babe.
