I'm attempting to make a shirt for DH - when cutting out the material for the shirt, am I supposed to leave a certain amount around the pattern, or cut straight from the pattern??

depends on the pattern you are working from - most will say whether or not there is a seam allowance in the pattern or whether you have to leave one. I'm not a clothes sewer but I believe "most" of them have the seam allowance worked out for you. happy to be corrected on that though
I think the only pattern that doesn't give a seam allowance is Burda....so as a general rule yes there is a seam allowance.
That's if is a bought paper pattern.
Thanks for your help ladies :) I've cut it directly on the pattern, because there are notches to cut out at places, so I'm assuming they've worked in the seam allowance.
If not, I'm sure the shirt will fit someone - just not DH!
