What are your rules?

My DH thinks I have too many rules when i tcomes to naming babies! I think some rules are important so that you don't choose a name that doesn't suit or might offend someone! Here are mine!

MUST-HAVE RULES
1. Names must match .ie classic names so Charlotte and Sarah. Not Charlotte and Beyonce!

2. No names the same as close siblings, family or friends

OTHER RULES I LIKE
1. No double letters so we can't have M cause we already have Mackenzie (I actually don't like this rule but can't help sticking to it!!!)

2. No names of kids that I have taught as a teacher - EVER!! So this makes it very hard so I'm melowing on this one now.

3. No rhyming names!

4. No names that are similar to friends and family - I really like Tully for a girl but my girlfriend has Tilly and I think that's too close!

5.No names with nicknames that I hate

So am I making it hard on myself to choose - YES!!! But I can't help it!:D

LMAO mine are pretty much same!!! i need everyone to have diff initals DH doesnt understand point!! and most of rest u have listed!!!

its a struggle being 1 of last of friends to have kids!!

I didn't want a name that was in the close family or friends... preferrably a name not in either family at all.
I didn't want a name that could be easily shortened (my name is Sally and I get called Sal all the time!)
I also look at initials too... mine are SAG, not exactly nice when nasty school kids catch on to that....

And thats about it really...

1. No names with same initial as surname - so for me all S names are out (even though I really really like some S names).

2. No names with same inital as anyone in the immediate family (ourselves, our parents, our siblings) - so for me all T, K, S, J, N, D and M names are out.

3. No family names to be used (ie named after bubs great grandfather) either as first names or middle names. Part of me would really love to break this rule but how do I honor one person and use their name without offending someone else... so I have decided that no family names are to be used (this rule only goes back as far as our grandparents though as otherwise I could potentially wipe out quite a few names LOL)

4. No names that are similar to friends kidlets, family kidlets (nieces, nephews etc)

5. No names that describe an occupation... DPs surname describes an occupation so I couldn't have a Hunter S******* for example because it just sounds wrong

6. Names have to flow well together.

7. I and DP have to agree on name - there is no "well you can have that name, if I can have this middle name" sort of thing to happen

8. Consideration has to be given to the initials

and then pretty much similar to yours! DP thinks I am a nutter but I don't care LOL

This is a copy of what I posted in my Pregnancy Journal for my third child:

* I would have to feel comfortable introducing myself with the name if it was mine.

* Can't be a name of a relative or friend (or preferably even acquaintance).

* Can't rhyme with our surnames (we have hyphenated surnames)

* Preferably doesn't share the initial of our surnames or other immediate family members (if something arrives in the mail with just a first initial I want to know who it is for without having to open the letter, plus it is nicer doing cross-stitch sampler with each family member having their own initial).

* Is short, preferably one syllable (our surname is long, hardly fits onto Medicare card!)

* Is reflective of our Irish/English/Swedish heritage.

* Isn't a name of a child that i have worked with (Early Learning Centre) that was challenging.

* Isn't popular. I don't want my child to be an Alex J. or Alex B. at school (No offense to those called Alex but it was a highly popular name at the ELC I worked at between 1999-2003.

* Won't cause too many spelling/pronunciation issues. I am forever having to spell/say my name and people are always getting it wrong.

* Preferably can't be shortened or commonly corrupted eg Edward/Ted.

* Has to have an ok Numerology chart.

The only rule that I have is I don't want all kids to ahve the same fist initial, as I am just not in to that.
My DH has 52 first cousins, out of the cousins, we are up to baby 89 due in January, so there are many that have the same names.
My son is james. DH had an uncle James, a cousin called james, and there are 2 3rd generation James' so far.
Doesn't worry me in the least.

I dont have too many rules, but I do have some

- I am a teacher, so no names that make me shudder due to children I have taught
-preferrably 2 syllables
- Nothing to plain/ common as we are smith's
- can't start or end with s as it sounds funny with surname
-no made up names

Now that I've read other peoples rules I have more!! I agree about it not being too commong but without being totally weird either. I also agree that both partners have to agree.

Phew we do make it hard for ourselves!!

That is the funniest thing I have heard all day! love it! lol

My only rules were:
*Not the same as CLOSE friends or family (we dont have 89 kids to contend with so not hard lol)
*no made up names
*no stupid spellings
*had to have a meaning I liked or a meaning full stop.
*had to not be the name of an infamous person in history or crime lol (seriously)

DH has a "Scrabble" rule... if it can be played on a Scrabble board, then no-go.
So no Iris, Ruby, Violet, Daisy, etc. SIgh....

I have loads of rules too, most of which already mentioned by Jordie or Bath. But to add to the complexity, our names have to be pronounced the same in English and Flemish (Dutch), as my DH is from Belgium. ie we couldn't use Jane, as that is pronounced Yana, Jasper is pronounced Yasper. And they have to be names in both languages too, obviously. This is causing us sooooo much grief. All my favourite names seem to have some weird meaning in Dutch (ie Tasman = Bag Man, Zac = slang for scrotum). We are never going to agree, especially if this new bean's a boy!! :wall:

I thought I was crazy for having rules - but I guess not!

*Our last name is Jones, so no names (first or middle) starting with J
*One name has to be a Bible name
*One name has to be standard
*One name has to be a bit weird - for personality sake!
*Each child to have 1 middle name
*First boy to have Stewart as middle name, to continue a family tradition

So far for our kids we've picked -

Hannah Nerys - First bible + standard, second weird
Keturah Christine - First bible + weird, second standard
Micah Stewart - First bible + weird, second standard

We both had to agree fully on the first name.

Middle names are for family - first for my side then for DH's if possible (he has no female family names and his mum's name doesn't sound good after Zaidie).

The name has to be not too "weird" according to DH, so Jareth for a boy and Tyra for a girl are both out.

The name has to flow with the surname, so Eloise or Matthias are out (DH's rule but I can see the point.

For a girl, it had to be a name that wasn't in common useage. But not too out there: Zaidie wasn't in the "first name" list. Also not too "really old" which is why Miriam and Elspeth were out, even though I do love those names. Faye was in for a short while.

The meaning of the name must be to praise God. EG Liebling is a gift from God. I am a pure woman who is like God, a princess (my full names!).

I'm sure we had more! But those are the ones that were the most important.

I PICK THE NAME!!!


My DD's father chose her name, and my partner has 2 boys, which he chose names for (their deal was, if its a girl, Mum names it, if its a boy, Dad names it)... So I'm like - its my turn!!

My goodness, you have WAY too many rules LOL!

My only rule is this:

First name and middle name must not be able to be shortened to letters, such as, Connor James - CJ
