Can I get a refund if I dont have a receipt?

I went shopping at coles the other night and purchased a few items. I only bought some cheese (just cheapo coles brand cheese), cheapo coles brand toothpaste, 3 bananas, small packet of bacon, cheapo coles brand crumpets, gingerbread cookie, and maybe one or two other small things like a bottle of milk or something. I paid on my debit card and it was $27-something in total.

I've looked at my bank statement today and they have taken $81 out of bank account!! I definately didnt buy $81 worth of things so I have no idea what happened. I dont have my reciept , I have looked for it but cant find it. I think hubby has thrown it in the bin because I always keep the receipt in case I need to take something back.

This has totally killed my budget for the week, and $50 is heaps of money for us. Do you think Coles would give me a refund if I went in and explained the problem? Has anyone successfully gotten a refund like this, without a receipt?

I think you need to call the store and see what has happened.

Also call your bank and find out what the process is.

Did you get cash out at the same time?? That's thrown me out a couple of times :) Otherwise I would get your bank statement, and try and remember which checkout you used and what time - that way they can go back through their systems.

id definatly find out if cash was taken out and i mean by the check out chick! a chick did this to me, she added $50 for cash out lucky i always read the amount before putting my pin # in and caught her!
i doubt you'll get a refund but definatly bring it to there attention

No I didnt get any cash out. I never get cash out. I did check the docket before I signed, it was $27, and some amount of cents that I dont remember. I have a debit card, I do not do eftpos as I get charged for the transaction, so it gets put through as a "credit" transaction and I sign the docket like you would with a credit card.
I know which register I went to, and I would be able to describe the guy that served me, and I know the time and date I was there. Maybe if I give them a call they might be able to tell me if they can do anything.

sunflowa_girlie: can they actually go back and check their computer for the transaction, if I know the time, date, register etc??

i used to work at coles and yes they can get every transaction done by that guy that night so if u know the time it would help a lot lol

So do I just show up at that particular Coles store, tell them my problem and all the details (time, date, register, the guy that served me - i dont remembe rhis name but I remember what he looks like, hopefully they know their staff!) and they can look it up?
I remember the time because when I got into the car, I looked at the time in the car and it was 6:52pm and thought yay I'll be home in time to see Masterchef (lame i know, LOL) otherwise I wouldnt have remembered the time.

You'll probably need to ask for a supervisor - they would be the ones who are aware of any till discrepancies, especially dealing with EFTPOS, KWIM?

you can't get cash out with credit. Something else must have happened.

LOL ok now this is soooo dumb! I asked my husband again and he says 'oh yeah, i remember now, i did buy some new knives at coles..' So I found his reciept in the car and, of course, it was the $81. I dont know why he didnt tell me this before (or why he bought new knives when ours are completely fine.. what a waste of money).
My other transaction for $27 is still pending - its there but just hasnt come up on my statement yet. hahahaha!!!!

From my experience working at a bank you will probably find that Coles wont help you out. You will probably need to do a disputed transaction at your bank. This seems to happen to a lot of people.

Bet you'd rather have a good laugh about it then have lost $50 ... i feel so relieved for you :D .. That's great news & some extra new knives as a bonus ;)
