Newbie and just diagnosed with PCOS

Hi everyone. Firstly I would like to say I love this site. This is my first time to post but I have been reading the posts for a while now. A pregnant friend told me about this site and ever since I have been hooked. You guys offer so much suport to each other.

DH and I are not activly TTC yet but after being on the pill for a number of years I thought I would try and get my body into some sort of normal routine. Unfortunately this was not the case. My first cycle I had was 35 days which I thought was ok but 2nd cycle has now been 65 days. For the first time in my life I actually want AF.

After a blood test and ultrasound I have now been diagnosed with PCOS today :cry: My sister has it so I was half expecting this but was praying that it wouldn't be the case for me. I was devastated but life goes on.

My GP has now prescribed me Provera just to get me to bleed (sorry TMI) and we will go from there.

So anyway I just wanted to introduce myself and say how much I admire you ladies it must be tough TTC for a long period of time.

Please don't worry too much. There is so much to be done for women with PCOS these days. The way I see it it's far better than having an unkown cause of infertility, cause at least you know what to do about it.

In my case, I was on metformin for PCOS for 6 months before we decided it was time to TTC. I fell pregnant in two months. Thanks to metformin I was ovulating by myself :D

So there is hope! BTW there is a great support group specifically for women with PCOS. There is a sticky in the main Endometriosis/PCOS discussion thread.

ktgirl, I almost thought I was reading about myself when I read your post!

I had always been very irregular when I was younger, it was normal for me to go several months (and one time even over a year) without a period... eventually at 19 I went on the pill to get some control.

Stopping the pill, my first cycle was 38 days, which was the shortest I had EVER had in my entire life so I suddenly started to think that maybe I was ok now... I'm now in my second cycle at 65 days and still counting, have had a scan which confirms PCOS and initial blood tests done for the specialist I am seeing in 2 weeks time.

I actually feel quite luck - we haven't been ttc for long, so having found it this early has saved us about a year of heartache, and not only do I have the wonderful support of the women here, one of my oldest and closest friends is a obs/gyn registrar and works with someone who has done quite a lot of research into how to treat PCOS.

Hang in there, you certainly aren't alone!

Kylie congratulations on your pregnancy, it was great to hear that you were ovulating by yourself this was my main concern. Can you explain what Metformin is I haven't heard about that drug before as I am only new to this.

BW I can't beleive that our cycle days were almost exactly the same. Good luck when you go to the specialist.

metformin is basically a drug that combats the insulin resistance that underlies the rest of the PCOS issues.

there are some doctors and specialists out there who believe that metformin is only useful if you have an abnormal glucose tolerance test, but (and this comes from my friend in the business) the latest research has found that treatment with metformin is still helpful with a normal GTT.

I'm just hoping that the specialist I've been referred to is up to date with the latest research. My chart is starting to show that my body is at least TRYING to ovulate regularly - still no sign of AF, though. But, by the looks of things, I don't think I can expect it for another couple of weeks!

I too have pcos. I was diagnosed after I had been ttc #2 for 10 months unsuccessfully. AF was horrible and all over the shop. An ultrasound and blood test confirmed... My sister also has pcos, although is in complete denial and will not have it confirmed by a doctor... I also have PCOS running on both sides of my family.

My main pcos symptoms are my weight and that typical concertrated weight around the middle. My pimples AHHHH I hate them!! and it used to be my menstral cycle, but some weight loss got that under control and actually saw me fall pg naturally.

I can not speak highly enough of losing a little bit of weight by following a low GI diet. I was 96kg after having my ds and over time lost 10kg cutting out sugar (very hard as my cravings are insane!) and following a low GI diet.

there are quite a few ways of treatment for controlling your pcos, all depending what your main objective is (i.e. getting pg, controlling AF, improving moodyness or af pains, losing weight) The best thing to do is find a knowledgeable GP or OBGYN and arm yourself with all the information you can get your hands on from the net ( heaps from a simple google search) and take control of your treatment with the help of a good care giver.

I have had 2 natural conceptions and 1 assisted conception with Clomid... so keep your chin up!! its not all that bad :D

BW - is this research we can get our hands on? Is it published do you know? Is there a way I can refer my specialist to it if he's unaware of it?

I will email my friend and see what she says. If we get the name of the study and journal it was published in, that should be enough to direct your specialists to it.
