Isn't she too old now?

DD1 is 7. She started having hearing problems at 3 & had grommits inserted at 5.
The whole time the grommits were in we had problems. Every cold or flu she got her ears would leak, alot. We had to take her earrings out because it was getting in the piercing & infecting it.

Since the grommits have fallen out/closed - I'm not 100% sure they are gone, but has nearly been 2 years - she's been getting bad earaches again.

She's also having hearing problems again. I thought by now she should've grown enough that the fluid should be draining properly & not blocking her ears, but it is.

So, more hearing tests in store, more trips to doctors...What will they do? Would they re insert the grommits?

We talked about it today, & about her surgery last time & she'd be ok with it, but I really thought the problem should be gone by now?

Can anyone help?

The surgery & grommits were fine for us, nothing really, its the keeping them dry for 12 or so months afterwards thats a bit harder.

I had ear problems a a child, infections constantly, ruptured ear drums, grommets(we lost count at 18 odd grommet ops:o)
I did grow out of it, eventually, but not until I was 11 or so and funnily enough, it was right around the time that mum gave up being a complete nazi about me getting them wet. (prior to this it had been earplugs and swimming caps all my life :redface:when school swimming lessons were on)
I think I then spent a summer at dads swimming in the ocean and I believe that the salt water dried them right out and got rid of all the nasty bacteria.
Sorry for the rambling, and its prob not what you want to hear, but she prob will grow out of it, it may just take a little longer.

I have read they are ok to get wet, as long as the water is clean & not soapy. But for the first few months, the odd occasion she did get water in them she'd get an instant earache.

Can I ask what they are?

We are going to see a doctor tomorrow, but its not our usual doctor. I'm not real happy we couldn't get in to see him...Flu season at its peak I guess.
They did tell me over the phone though that there can be problems right through to the teen years :(

sorry i didnt get back to you in time for your doctors appt.

T tubes are a drainage tube that gets attatched to the eardrum.(its the shape of a T) because it is a semi permanent tube for at least 2 yrs you cant get water in your ear.. i had no probs with this and still now i hate getting water in my ears.

its day surgery with an ENT. i dont think i had my last one out (my first one i grow a pollip over it so it had to be removed and replaced) but the removal is generally a simple bit of suction.

i would highly recomend chatting to your ENT about it..

There is alot of wax/discharge in her ear, so we have to clear that out. Then have her ear flushed. Then a hearing test. Then the ENT.
The doc we saw thinks its just the wax, which is in one ear & I know her hearing is way too bad for it to just be wax. & it happened straight after a few days of an ear infection.
I just hope the system is better here & it doesn't take 18 months & going to a different hospital to get it done!
