What is going on? I'm so worried.

Orson had a perforated ear drum(left ear) 9 weeks ago. He was seen a month later and it was healed. 2 weeks ago the same ear drum perforated again. 3 days ago he was seen by the GP and it was healed. Now tonight it has perforated again! Each time there is thick green pus coming out of his ear. Also this time and the first time he has the same thick green pus coming out of his eye which looks liek congunctivitis, however i don't think it is. I think it's related to his ear.

I am confused. Each time his ear drum looks fine after, no hole, no infection and then it pops again. I don't know what's going on.

He seems clingy and fussy the day before it perforates and then fine after. However, he never has a fever.

I was told the only reason pus would be coing out his ear like that is that an ear infection has popped the ear drum. But is this really what is happening? And the fact it's coming out his eyes?

I'll be ringing the GP first thing tomorrow morning and demanding he see an ENT about it. But im just so worried and i can't find anything on this at all.

Yep definitely get a referral to see a ENT specialist (ear, nose throat). I have found that conjunctivitis does often occur with other illnesses, so better get it checked as you may need antibiotic ointment. We just had it with DS and he got bronchiolitis straight after, so isn't unusual to have a few thnings going on. Good luck xo

Yep the ears and throat are connected and the tear ducts drain to the throat so that's probably what you are seeing. Can't be good near his ear though.
Hope you get some progress for him.

maybe there is an underlying infection in his sinuses thats the problem

I saw a story on RPA last night about a lady who kept getting abcesses(sp?) on her ear drums and they were popping. Just a thought.

Best to get him to a specialist i think.

It sounds like an infection to me. The reason that the puss is coming out of the eye is:-
You have a small tube that connects the ear to the back of the throat (Eustation Tube). You also have a tube that connects the eye to the back of the nose (can’t remember the name of it). These tube exits are quite close to each other . The infection in the ear is probably under a little pressure. So therefore the puss travelling down the Eustation Tube could quite easily travel up the tube that I can’t remember the name of and end up coming out of the eye.
I think seeing an ENT would be a good idea.

Possibly grommits. Not sure as its different, but when DD1 had grommits every time she had an ear infection fluid would leak out her ears. So it might help if they have that release? :hug:

Went to the GP and he's now on his 3rd lot of antibiotics. He'll need to be seen again in 10 days and we've been given a referal to an ENT specialist. The GP said he'll probably need grommets. But i thought they didnt put them in until 3 years of age?

Kane had grommits at 18 months babe.
And I know clefts are different, but they tend to get ear infections, and so some cleft bubbas get grommits very early, I know of some getting them at 4 months due to heaps of infections in the first few months of life...

So he's not too young, and they just may give them to him at this age. He does have to go under for it, but its very fast and simple.

Nah, Grommits are more often done at 2 or 3, but when ever they are needed. DD is probably going to have her second lot & I thought she would be too old!

Hi there, sounds like you guys have had a really rough trot with ear infections.

I suspect from what you are describing that what your DS has is a really stubborn middle ear infection that is never completely clearing up - it is improving enough to the point where there are no symptoms, but once he gets run down or something upsets his immune system, it starts to multiply. Especially as the symptoms seem to be the same each time. Bright green pus can sometimes mean pseudomonas is the culprit, which can be hard to treat.

He is little for grommets, but they tend to them based on need rather than age, and if his eardrum has perforated that many times in recent months, I think it would make sense for him to have them, otherwise you run the risk that his hearing may be infected. You can also have speech difficulties later on in life too if they have recurrent ear infections at a young age, because their hearing is impaired each time they have the infection and as a result they are exposed to less speech and can take longer to develop their own speech patterns.
