Do I wake him to change his nappy?

When DS went to bed, his poor little bottom was looking a bit red, so I slathered on the cream. When I went in to check on him an hour and a half ago, his room smelled a bit like pooey bum, but he was dead to the world. I thought if he woke up, I would check and see if the nappy was dirty, or if he had just been farting (tmi...)- its really hard to tell. But he hasn't woken, he's sleeping so soundly! I don't want him to get awful nappy rash if he's sleeping in a yucky nappy, but I hate the thought of waking him.

Maybe I will go stick my nose next to him and see whether I think its serious or not...

If I think DS may be dirty I just open sleeping bag, and pear in from side of nappy if dirty I would wake him.

If it was me I wouldn't wake him. If his bottom is sore he will wake up at least my DS always does.

But go ahead and do whatever makes you feel ok, you just have to choose between red bottom and tired baby lol.

will he go back to sleep straight away if u wake him and change him? i am able to change Mia alot of the time and she wont wake much at all. Personally.. ide prob leave it coz i feed Mia at 10pm. But if u dont, i wouldnt leave it to morning.

Aricyn did this to us a little while ago (even though he's older) and we didn't want to wake him either!! But we got a nice warm bottle of milk, and DH held it for him to drink, while I quickly changed his nappy.

You know what the worst thing was (he did go back to sleep which was good)

I'd try to peek in the nappy first without waking to be sure ;) I couldn't sleep if I suspected poo in the nappy. I'd be fretting lol.

He might just need a little top up and a cuddle to go back to sleep.

RESULT.....

Completely inconclusive.

Although, possibly would have been quite and amusing sight- me leaning over the cot rail, almost falling in trying to get my nose close to his bum, stealthily trying to unzip his sleeping bag with him wiggling away from me in his sleep. I even resorted to waving my hand near his bum to waft the potential poo smell nearer. Classy.

Ended up sending hubby in for a "fresh nose" test. He gave me one of those looks, but he went. DH opinion: no poo.

hehahaaaaa that's so similar to what we do sometimes!!!!!

Usually if I think he's done a poo, I peak in the side of the nappy in between his legs on his bum ... and if its still inconclusive I change anyhows, specially if he's got a red bum already! I think its easier to get him to sleep than to relieve the pain of nappy rash.

AmberJ - this thread made me chuckle - I used to laugh at all my Mummy Friends who were Mums when they went on a 'sniff' test, but now I am a "Bum-sniffer" like the best of them!! :ROFL:

My 2 cents - I wouldn't want to sleep in poo all night so I'd probably gently undress a bit to check the nappy properly, or like MummaMia suggested if he isn't too far from a wake and feed, do it then

I would change DS if he is dirty or really wet. But he just stays asleep. It is actually really hard to get him to wake up before he is ready (hence he woke up from his nap at 5pm today when his bedtime is 7pm!!!)
