Talk me through a newborn needs in summer

I was going through all my baby clothes and I have no idea what I need for this new little guy. He is due mid summer. And I have a cupboard full of newborn winter things. DS1 lived in wondersuits and flannelet wraps and jumpers and cotton blankets and beanies.

So I have plenty of singlets, and assume DS2 can do singles and nappies and muslin wraps, but how well can he regulate his temp and what else will I need? Can he sleep (read live) in just a singlet and wrap? I would hate to think that in the heat of summer he is cold. I do have a couple of 000 Bonds cotton rompers (3/4 sleeves and legs) which I think will work, and a few short sleeve button under the nappy tops too. I guess he will need a tiny baby sunhat too?

Having babies of the same gender but in opposite seasons is not the "Oh I have a boy therefore I have everything I need" scenario I first imagined...

DS was a summer baby (born January 10th) in the middle of the Queensland summer (hot hot hot!) and lived in singlets and his nappy for the most part during the day - and I would use a muslin wrap around him. Then at night, I used suits with no legs, and little capped arms (can't remember the proper name for them) and a slightly heavier wrap (but not too much). We also had the fan going in his room.

Never used a sun hat - we didn't take him out in the sun cos its pretty fierce up here.

If you need extra suits, I'm sure I have plenty I can share with you!!

I have a Feb bub and you really don't need a lot of clothes for them. Unless you have aircon that is run all day/night etc, then you wont need more than a singlet and wrap, with a jumpsuit at night. If you do run the aircon all the time, then you will probably just need some cotton onesies etc and it will be more than enough for bubs. The general rule of thumb is however many layers you have on, put an extra one on them, but of course if he is sweating madly then you would strip him down, likewise put a suit on if he feels cold.

ETA - as for hats, many of the tiny baby ones just don't cover their little faces well enough as the brims aren't wide enough. It would probably be best to get a shade cover for the pram and keep him out of the sun as much as possible.

I had DD in the historic 2008 Adelaide March heatwave where it was 15 days straight of over 35 degrees. I think she was born on day 5 of the heatwave!
She wore nappies and singlets and also body suits now and then (you know, the legless ones). I didn't wrap her during the heat wave, but at night would just put a muslin over the top of her and tuck it under the mattress.

just singlets mainly. I found DD used to sweat more if she didnt have a singlet on. ALl she wore through summer was singlets, shorts, and short sleeved onsies.

I have a few cotton jersey wraps. Do you think they would be OK to?

cotton is good - breathable.

oh and lotsa face washers, i always had one on hand to wipe DD down when she got abit hot.

Ds was born mid dec and he lived in nappies and singlets. Most days i put a sleeveless and body suit (snap crotch thingy) on over the singlet. At night we wore the same with a muslin wrap and socks. We had the fan on in the room and the a/c going in the house most of the time.

Put it this way, you dont need much. I do remember having a couple of longer all in ones JIC and i did need to use them as we did have a few cooler days over christmas :)

If you don't have aircon then he will definitely be living in singlets! The heavier wraps should be fine as sometimes the night can get a bit chilly.

I have had 2 summer bubs and mine lived in short all in ones suits, singlets and shorts/skirts. I avoided dresses because they ride up and are a PIA for newborns. You'll need heaps of large muslin wraps. For night my girls had a short all in one with light pants and were wrapped in a muslin wrap or slightly heavier cotton wrap. Or you could get a some very light long all in ones for night time too.
