Want to recommend a really good book to you all.

Me being the obsessional person that I am, doing IVF I needed to read as much as I possibly could about it. I read all of the literature and more that my Dr gave me.

I have searched for books in the shops and bought a few good ones, but I just wanted to share a particular one with you all.

It is called "Child Against All Odds" and is written by a UK Dr called Robert Winston. You might know him from various documentaries, mainly "Child of our Time".

His book goes into the history of IVF, what he thinks of it, how he thinks that in some cases with good investigative treatment some women could actually conceive without it. It's a very very interesting read and brings up some excellent issues, certainly somethings that I haven't even considered throughout this journey. He goes way back in time, talks about the references to infertility in the bible, how certain religions condemn IVF and how surprisingly some support it.

I got it in QBD for $6. Such a good read, especially for us chicks who have had to do IVF and would have been really good to read before the IVF journey. Not that it would have changed anything for me - I am in the group of women who he considers to require IVF but it is very informative.

He also points out that Australia is the world leader in IVF. Now, aren't we lucky to live here? I KNEW there was another reason for moving to Brisbane (I'm from Scotland).

Just wanted to share that with you all. Of all the books I have read on IVF, this is the best.

How did you find his style? I have found he can be a bit abrupt in other things he has written on the subject and tends to focus mainly on the science and not necessarily the emotional needs of patients.

Hehe, it is funny you should mention that Dusty, because I find him the same. But in his book he actually says that he is disgusted that some Drs refuse to acknowledge the emotional pain that infertile couples face and that it should be more recognised throughout the medical world. And that people's mental health has an impact upon the outcomes of IVF in some cases.

I am impressed with that statement and would love to see more FSs taking the emotional impacts into account with the treatment plan.

Not hijacking the thread, it is interesting though, how certain fs's, authors etc dont consider the emotional needs of patients, then I saw a show on foxtel, where an american surgeon said "I have to distance myself from my patients emotional needs, in order to provide proper care"

That statement answered a question for me

Hmmm, that is a fair point to make hey? I guess I never really thought about it like that either. My Dr is lovely but doesn't get into too much feeling stuff.... he is very much a "lets get down to business" man. I guess they just have to hey? Otherwise they'd be bogged down with all our emotional baggage as well as our fertility baggage!

Prof. Winston's awesome!! He did that series The Human Body....incredible! In the episode where he followed falling pregnant and throughout pregnancy...I was glued to the tv. He can appear quite straight laced, but there was one episode where he wanted to show the effects of alcohol, and had about 4 or 5 bottles of wine...hilarious:D Showed his human side. He's Lord Winston too now! I'll check that book out, bargain thanks for info.

ps. I lived in Edinburgh for 13 years...aren't we lucky to be over here in this awesome climate! ooh and congrats on BFP

Airline, I saw that episode where he got drunk, you're right, it was hilarious!!

YAY for Edinburgh, that is where we lived for 5 years before coming here. Beautiful place but brrrr..... too cold! Couldn't go back there now after living in Sunny Bris-Vegas!!
