Concussion signs

DD had a huge collision this morning with another child, she whacked her head quite badly on the floor when she went down. I wouldnt normally worry too much as she has had a few collisions before, however it has taken her an hour to calm down after the incident. She is quietly watching hi 5 atm, but she has a HUGE bruise on her temple/forehead area. Should I be worrying about concussion? I called my hubby & he said not to put her down to sleep this arvo & just keep an eye on her. What would you do?!

MM, ow ow, poor little M. Just watch her this afternoon, if she seems disoriented, confused, vomits or unusually sleepy, take her up the to doctors/hospital and get her checked out.

FWIW DD1 was a very clumsy child, I have spent many a day watching for concussion signs but never had any problems. If it were me, I would let her stay up for a bit (quiet play), but you might find after all the drama (not to mention sore head) she might need a sleep anyway. You can always put her down for a sleep then go in and wake her to check on her every so often.

Don't forget you can ring the 24 hr health line in your state if you are undecided about what to do :hug:

Thanks MD, she is happy enough at the moment. I think I will try her with a sleep as she is tired, and I'll just keep checking her. M is always in the wars too, but she's never had such a bad accident I felt like crying along with her!

There is some good info about head injuries here. They make a distinction about sleepiness vs. being hard to wake after being asleep for an hour or so.

PS meant to say, trust your mummy sense...if you feel things aren't right (no matter what the reason), get her checked.

PPS Also meant to say, nothing wrong with going to the dr just for mummy reassurance reasons LOL. Done that before today! :)

Thanks MD thats a good link! Well she definately doesnt seem unusually sleepy, she is in her bed now but keeps jumping out & doing things in her room. But if she falls asleep I will check on her & see how she is going. I am pretty sure she is ok, it was just so scary to see & it wasnt like her to be so upset for that long. I'll see how she goes & whether we should be going off to the doc

MM My DS took a massive tumble on Tuesday and ended up with a huge egg on the back of his head. I rang 13HEALTH (not sure if it is the same in WA), they ran through a whole heap of questions with me and then left me some instructions and things to watch for. I needed to gently wake DS every two hours overnight to check for a late concussion, it is lucky I need to pee every two or so hours at the moment lol.

Noah fell off the lounge yesterday arvo and landed on the side of his head. For about 5 mins after I picked him up and calmed him down he was VERY quiet and I was weighing going to hospy or not and then BANG...he was *alive* again! He will be the death of me I swear, lol

LOL Vixstar, I know the feeling. Being a mum means a lifetime of worry (& guilt but thats another thread!)

I guess i should be glad my N is so cautious physically!

Bit late, but for future reference, I was told that the biggest indicator of something serious is how long it takes them to cry. The longer the pause before they react, the more chance of serious injury.

If they start screaming immediately, its mostly shock and pain - just keep them awake and a close eye on them for an hour.
