Baby Shower Food advice/idea needed

Howdy all,

I am posting this because both my Bestie and myself have absolutely NO IDEA :lol:

When do you serve the food? Do you just leave all the nibbles out and let people pick then just pop hot food out? do you "break" and have all your food then?

Bestie wants to write a schedule of how the day will go so she has it in her mind so any suggestions will be welcomed.

I am kind of a pop everything out let people help themselves then bring out hot food kind of person its a case of "there is the kitchen help yourself" kind of attitude :lol: I blame that on MIL :lol: But I think for a hosted party that that laid back kind of thing might not work.

so what to do????

At my baby shower we had a table of food & everyone helped themselves when they wanted something. We had finger sandwiches, cakes, nibbles, party pies & stuff. But we ended up having a mixed shower with males & females & didnt end up playing the games & all (so I was disappointed at that) but we then had a BBQ for everyone after the shower

For mine we did a combination. We had the tables set up so that everyone was sitting at a designated spot (name cards) and then we had nibblies out for when people arrived, just stuff like chips, lollies and cookies. Then my husband was down stairs cooking kebabs on the BBQ (I had made kebabs that had steak, sausage and bacon alternating) and then when he was done we put them out with some salads as well as some mini quiches that were being kept warm in the oven - so it took a bit of prep work before but during the actual shower there was little to be done, just putting the food out on the tables. Then we cleared that away (not that there was much to clear, it was pretty much all gone), and we put out brownies, cupcakes and caramel tarts for desserts.
It sounds really structured but it worked on the day and didn't come across so structured, it still felt very much like a casual event. We asked people to arrive at midday, DH brought the kebabs up about 12:45 and then dessert about 2 I think?? We had the name cards out because I have a lot of friends from different areas (work, family, uni etc), I didn't want some to have to sit with strangers because other groups had spread out everywhere, it was my way of making sure everyone was comfortable where they were. It made it HEAPS easier for the games to. We played games pretty much the whole time until dessert came out.

It worked for us, I had a great day and there were a lot of positive comments. Hope it helps.

i was sick from a baby shower coz some food was left out for 2 long so yeah just be careful

just IMO, but to me a baby shower is just a laid back kind of get together some people have to celebrate bubs. Therefore I would just go with finger food & bring hot food out as it's ready. Any I've been to have been like that....just help yourself amongst chatting & playing games.

Well, I have absolutely no idea :) I have been to one, my SIL, and it was very casual - food was put out on the table and you helped yourself between gas bagging and playing games and watching her open all her gifts ;)

I just wanted to pop in and give you a big :hug: too, I can't believe you're planning your baby shower already. Time surely does fly!

:yeahthat: All the baby showers I have been to have been like that. I think it works well, and keeps it casual and fun.

I just hosted a baby shower for a friend at the weekend there.

We did a combination. I had some nibbles out, then we played some games, had a wee break for some hot food and then got back into the games.

It worked really well.

At mine we did the following:

- nibbles on the table (cheese platters, dips, etc) and drinks for the first half an hour, as everyone arrived
- played several games while hot food was heating up
- breaked for 'lunch' - we had party pies, sausage rolls, fresh sandwiches, lamb meat balls, home made pizza, quiches, nori rolls, etc
- guests continued to eat while I unwrapped my gifts
- once I finished unwrapping pressies and had a gasbag to my guests, we had afternoon tea - tea and coffee with cup cakes, cake, biscuits, etc
- we wrapped up after that

It worked beautifully and several people commented on what a great time they had and how good it was.

All the ones I've been to have been the same format, except for my own!

Mine was a pub lunch with games between courses and gifts between main/dessert. I would have preferred a roomier venue and not so much of an audience!

All others Ive been to have been the same as mentioned above: nibblies/dips etc out and then hot food brought later with plenty of games/chatting throughout. The focus was more on the games and gifts than the food.

I did get food poisoning from one baby shower though- with the dips being left out too long so just bear that in mind, especially with pg people there! I would be choosing foods very carefully rembering that a lot of pg women are fussy about what they eat. Especially things like cold or processed meats, soft cheeses etc. Are there going to be other pg guests? I went to a wedding at 39weeks and found there was almost nothing I could eat. ( hot weather, seafood, outdoor venue)

I asked a friend that had been to a few about them and when she started mentioning games... I thought she had it confused with what to do for my babies 2nd or 3rd b'day???
I was under the impression it was just for us girls but my DH is expecting to be there with the boys as well. Is that normal? Ofcause all the boys did gate crash my hens cause they thought they would have more fun at mine then the bux so should I let them or stand my ground?
We will be moving into our own home before bub is due so Would it be more acceptable if I tie the baby shower in with a house warming? or keep them seperate?

Oh and what is with the games?? Surely they wont be expecting me to pop balloons under my bum to do activities written on a peice of paper do they? and as for running around chairs till the music stops.... It better be Bl00dy slow music for me to move! :redface:

"couples" baby showers are becoming more and more popular. My original plan for my shower was to have a couples one and invite hubby's, partners and friends of all the gal pals I am having over to help DH celebrate. I did forget that DH had a wedding gig that he has to play at on the same day and because I couldn't change the date of my shower (due to work and other commitments) we just went for a all girls affair ;)

There are sooooo many games that can be played at a shower, some more physical than others so I guess it depends on how far into your pregnancy you will be when you hold yours. If you or your friend googles baby shower games there are many many websites to browse through.

We are having about 6 games but I cannot say which ones coz there will be a few from BB coming along and somethings need to be left for a surprise. I will say though that there is nothing terrible physical coz I get far too tired now let alone at 32 weeks when I am bigger :lol:

As for food, I loved the idea of a laid back BBQ but again coz DH has a lot of things he needs to do before his gig it will just be easier to have the standard party food and nibbles.

If you want to tie it in with your house warming that will be great but you will need to make sure that the people you want to have at your baby shower and a house warming are the same. Personally I would have them separate but thats just me and the idea of having 2 parties maybe a bit much not just for you to organise but for your guests as well.

Thanks Nae, I'll Do that (google the games) I'll have to think about seperating the shower and housewarming MAYBE ! I think if I'm able to have them a couple of months appart I'll go that option. Maybe even have the house warming after bub is here then that should cut back on scattered visiters when he/she is born. ???
Also, I was thinking about getting one of those mobile 4D ultrasound scans to come when the baby shower is on, Would that be a bit creapy or ok to do?

OMG can they do that I had no idea they could come and do a scan at your shower - or do you mean get one done and have it playing at the shower??

How far along will you be when you move?

I like the idea of having the house warming after the baby is born depending on how bub goes I have heard the first month you'll be like a living zombie :lol: I do like that idea coz everyone will get to see bub, I think you will still get a lot of scattered visitors though.

GL with your decision - maybe have your shower somewhere else too that way you can still do both. Only reason I am having mine here at home is because our rooms are largish and I am the most comfortable here JIC something happens.

:lol: at being organised ... seriously I have waited 2 years to get this far and DH put a ban on me buying baby stuff this pregnancy in case things didn't work out so its the ONLY thing I have been able to do :lol: Plus I am a control freak :lol:

Hi Nae, Yeah they have mobile ones that come to your home. Their U/S thingie just connects to your tv to watch on the big screen or record it if you wish. I stumbled across it when looking into the 4d scans to start up my own business (before falling preg) & they offered franchises in it (the mobile ones)
We're planning to move beginning of Oct sometime (i hope) or around then so i'll be around 25-29 weeks? depending on date of move???
Yeah, I'm more comfy at home too, and feel more in control. I think is would be nice to have babies room all set up too and kind of be on display IYKWIM?
:D It took me ages to get this far too! (13.5 years) So I know what you mean!!! Only I have had to stop DH, I was the 1 too scared to buy anything and am only now starting to brouse!
I did 'goolge' the games and found a fun site and paid for 1yr membership ($20?) for all their printable games (over 75 I think) which a personalisable (sp? is that even a word?) Anyway, I'm amaized at how much fun they sound. And also read in my search somewhere about a game I'm planning on getting the boys to do... It's called "my waters broke" you fill up the normal size balloons with water and they have to race with them between their legs! God I hope they all break! lol.
I will definately seperate the shower & HW though, make the HW about a mth after bub is born which will then be about 3.5 mths after the shower. Planning on the shower about 1st week of nov.
