Really bad Gastro - TMI!
Sorry about posting this but just wanted some advice.....
I have had the worst sick belly and have had gastro (not even proper gastro - just like passing pure liquid really with no gastro pains....sorry TMI!) since abut 3am Sunday morning which still hasnt stopped....I had a chicken schnitzel on Fri lunchtime and I'm wondering if this has set me off.....
Anyway, I'm nearly 28 weeks pregnant, can still feel the baby kicking heaps, but I just want to know if this will affect the baby in anyway?? I have hardly eaten anything since Fri and I have been constantly on the loo - how can my body have anything left to put down the toilet???? I have been drinking heaps of water, and my wee is also very yellow too.....could this be anything?
Going to Dr on Wed about something else so I guess I'll ask her then but any advice would be good! :(

Hi JDs Mum
You poor thing! Sounds awful.
I had gastro (both ends) last week and had a midwife's appt mid way through :P Her advice (and what i've read) was:
- as long as you keep weeing that's a good sign - at least every 6 hours and must be more than a trickle
- keep up fluids.
- Drink oral rehydrating salts after each loose movement - I used ORS brand, orange flavoured. I suggest you get some of these ASAP if not sooner. These salts are safe during pregnancy, but do ask your chemist if you purchase a different brand and they will check.
- if the runs persist for more than 48 hours see your doctor ASAP.
- if urine is only a trickle, is very dark yellow/brown, or if you feel really hot/dry, go to hospital immediately
- BRAT diet is good (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast)
So long as you keep hydrated, and follow guidelines, bub will be fine. Also keep an eye on your temp; about a day into it I got a low fever (37.5 deg) but a couple of panadol took care of that.
Get well soon!!

ps further to the above - blocker-uppers-ers (eg Immodium) are generally not recommended, unless it persists and your GP / midwife thinks it's a good idea

Just wondering how you're doing, JDs Mum??

Sorry for the late response - have been off the air the last couple of days....thanks for all your advice!
Still no real improvement, am on some Electrolyte drink that should keep me hydrated and the Dr has taken a stool sample to see whether or not I somehow got food poisoning from somewhere....
It has been 5 days now and I'm over it! My husband works at our local hospital and the nurse recommended that if it's still going on this afternoon then I should head up there to check it out....only problem is that it doesnt hit me until I have eaten a decent meal and I'm too scared to eat anything substantial cause the outcome isnt good!!
Cant win! Having some plain rice now so see how I'm going in a couple of hours time....

Sorry to hear you''re still on the go (so to speak) - does sound like it might be food poisoning or maybe something bacterial... hopefully the sample shows something so they know if it can be addressed with antibiotics.
Either way, I would soooo recommend starting probiotic tablets if you don't already (I take Inner Health Plus brand - I usually take 1 a day or less often, but since the gastro I've been taking two a day trying to get the system back into balance - it's slowly working!).
If you have a chance in a few days pls post again to let us know how you went.

I had something which sounds the same!! Started Saturday and only finished Tues night. Doc said was gastro and that there are strains around which don't really show any other symptoms. I didn't have cramping etc either. It was all over the place and in fact one time was 21 hours between toilet visits as in well yes you know... lol. I was the same as you and was scared to eat or drink cos it seemed to send me to the toilet.
Sunday and Monday my bottom got really sore and felt like it was burning as it came out and doc said that's cos upper digestive tract is very alkaline - so that really was the only discomfort I had and really had me thinking it was something else. I had rice on Tues night so I don't know if that helped stop things or not. I'd not heard of the BRAT diet but makes sense. Oh I'm bfing too so couldn't do the imodium but was drinking hydralyte. Also got Yakult which pharmacist said was great idea. I hope that it stops for you soon.

I just got over the same thing not two days ago, had it for just over a week. Complete water poos - was awful and burned! Lots of vomitting and loss of appetite. Just kept up my fluids, munched on my rennies and stuck it out. Was not nice though!
