Up vomiting all night, still sick- help!

Poor DS was sick all last night. He vomited probably 8 times overnight, about once an hour, causing him much distress each time. He finally had a good 4 hour stretch after about 4am, and today he has been off his food and a bit under the weather. We've been keeping fluids up to him, but not too much food.

But then this afternoon he did another little vomit- I don't even know when, but I could smell it on his clothes. It must have been during his nap. It freaked me out because I thought he was getting better. I did give him a little bit of lunch, maybe that upset his tummy?

Apart from keeping up fluids, is there anything else I should do? When should I get concerned and take him to the dr's? He's not at all lethargic, although very tired.

Can teething (molars) cause vomiting (this is from my DH....I didn't think so....)?

you poor things! my daughter's had several bouts of gastro this year. i don't know what part of australia you're in, but i called our maternal & child health line last time and they were very helpful. the advice they gave me was:

- keep feeding fluids at night, even if they get vomited up again (my dd is still breastfed; not sure what you give if not breastfed - maybe water?)

- if vomiting is still going after 12 hours (from first vomit) see your gp.

there probably were other warnings - like if temperature gets very high etc - but i can't recall the things they said that weren't relevant to my situation at that time.

anyway she did vomit again in the morning so i went to the gp but by then things had pretty much settled down and he said it's most likely a virus. for the next 24 hours dd had simple foods that wouldn't upset her stomach.

i'm no medical expert but it sounds to me like your son's recovering - it does take a while to get over these things and you need to make sure he's eating non-irritating foods - bland things like toast, rice etc. but perhaps you could call whatever helpline you have available and get some professional advice just to be on the safe side, so you know what to look out for. good luck, hope he's better soon.

It's good you are taking his food slolwly - it may take a week or so until his tummy recovers. Maybe some stewed pears/fruit, chicken soup (if he'll slurp it!), dry bikkies to chew etc.

Keep taking it easy, you are doing everything right - you just have to do it a little longer xoxoxo

Sounds like my DD's atm too....they are vomitting. My friend said theres a 48 hours bug going around

All of you with vomiting kids- have you got it after them? Tomorrow is DH's birthday and I have this fear of us both spending the day with our heads in buckets!

My DD was hospitalised for dehydration when she was 9 months so I remember the things the paed said to us at the time ;)

• 5 mls of water every 10 mins for for 2 hours will bring up hydration again in a little one if you are concerned about that (syringe)
• keep feeding them if they are hungry and will eat - no such thing as "starving" the bug as per old fashioned tales (!)
• when offering foods, keep basic carbs like bread and rice and cereals - steer away from dairy or things potential to upset a sensitive tummy

Hope that helps for the next 24 - 48 hours.

Oh - hygiene and plenty of hand washing and you and DH should be fine - fingers crossed for your family.

Thanks Sami, thats good advice. We've been syringing water/ diluted juice into him. He ate earlier today, but then went off his food completely this afternoon and evening- wouldn't even eat an arrowroot!

He is sleeping really restlessly, tossing about. I just wish I could hug it all better!

Oh no things must be bad - no bikkies!! :lol:

Dont forget pharmacies stock Hydrolyte or Gastrolyte icypoles too if the little ones wont eat for a day or more - will give them some energy still. They should have some frozen intheir freezers out the back so you dont have to go home and wait for the to freeze. Much easier than trying the drink if he will suck one of those!

Im hoping no one else gets sick....i do feel a bit 'off' tonight though

I hope he feels better soon. I just had my second gastro bug in 2 months last week!! Hydralyte is definitely a good thing for rehydrating also pharmacist said Yakult is good too (although slightly confused by that seeing as I always thought avoiding dairy based was good) cos it will help fight the bug by sending in the good bacteria.
