Toileting and Undies/pull-ups/nappies?

Hi there,

Claire is almost 2 and a half and she LOVES wearing undies. We put her in undies one day and told her to tell us when she needed to wee and we would help her on the potty. Anyway, she decided she doesnt need help so whenever she needs to go to the toilet, she just goes to the potty herself, takes her pants off, sits down and does what she needs to do, then comes back out and starts playing again. She doesnt even tell me she needs to go, she just goes herself. She wear undies all the time at home, except for when she sleeps. We dont have accidents when she is in undies.

But, I feel like I'm hitting a wall with TT and daycare. She goes to daycare mon, tues and wed , while I go to uni on those days. Her daycare wont let her be in undies at all ("she's too young and doesnt understand when she needs to wee, she will have too many accidents" is what I'm getting told even though I'm saying that she wears undes at home and doesnt have accidents). I have been told she MUST be in pull ups or nappies because undies arent allowed. However, there are twin boys there who are toilet training and they wear undies, so I'm confused now about why Claire isnt allowed to.

SO Can someone explain pull ups to me? I'm not keen at all on buying them as they seem very expensive and my understanding is that its just like a nappy but you put it on like undies so at the moment I cant justify the extra cost just for the fact that you put it on like undies. Or are they something totally differnt? (I'm just putting nappies in her daycare bag instead)

BUT, will she get confused if she gets to wear undies at home and go to the toilet herself, but then has to wear a nappy at daycare? I dont want her to get confused and feel as though she isnt allowed to use a toilet at daycare because of her nappy.
Is it better to get some of those stupidly expensive pull ups or will she still learn with nappies?

Sorry for asking so many questions.. I know she is able to work out that she is about to wee or poo, but daycare just isnt coming to the party on it right now and I dont know waht to do.

She sounds nearly toilet trained which is great! I would not even go pullups, they are nappies and are thinner and have a liner which tells the child they are wet, there are no tabs so they look more like undies but undo at the side. We tried that avenue and it has led us back to not being TT at all :(

I would tell them that she will be wearing undies. Or speak to the director of the centre mention the twins and say that your child is up that stage.

Thankyou Mishca. Yeah I kind of thought that was what Pull-ups probably were. I looked in Coles this morning and they sell them in a pack of 15 for $14!! What a rip off! If Claire is wearing a nappy/pull up, she'll wee in it because she knows she can, so I cant see the point in pull ups at all since she does wear undies at home without accidents. That was another thing I was worried about - that she would become reliant on the pull up/nappy again and just wee in it instead of using the toilet, and then un-toilet-train herself.

She actually goes to Family Day Care, so there is no Director as such and its just the one carer looking after 4-5 kids a day.. so in a way I can understand her position on undies/nappy for toilet training since its just her and she doesnt have help. The twin boys turned 3 in June and Claire was 2 in March. Claire is the youngest but there is another little girl similar age to Claire, maybe a month older than her. The boys mum brought them in one morning and said they were in undies, so I can only assume she meant undies not pull-ups and the carer said 'ok thats fine' .. so I dont knwo why its ok for them and not Claire. I just dont want her to be held back if she knows when she needs to go, we'll just go backwards. :(

I have a week off from uni starting 14th sept, maybe I should just keep her home that week and keep her in undies so she can have a FULL week in undies instead of changing between undies/nappies depending on where she is. Maybe it will help her?

I think I am about to have the same dilemma as my DD goes to childcare 2 days a week, and I don't know when to draw the line and say "yes, she is fully TT".

I've found the training pants by Bright Bots to be really good. Maybe your FDC mum would be happy to use those? They look and work just like a pair of undies, just a little bit bulkier, as they have a small bit of padding and a plastic inner. They catch and hold one small wee, so are great for little accidents, if they did occur. I just bought a batch, they were 3 for $12, and since they are washable they are way cheaper than pull-ups. Your DD could keep them as special undies for daycare days?
