Fetal Hydropsy/Edema

Hi Girls,

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right spot so mods, feel free to shift it!

Back in Decemeber I lost a baby to Fetal Hydrops/Edema. I don't know much about it, really, apart from it apparently being rare, and I was curious to know if there is anyone else out there who has had experience with this?

After the Post Mortem Dr's weren't able to tell me why what had happened happened... I was not anemic, had no infections and as far as they could see bubba was perfectly fine (not a result of turners sydrome as he was a boy) - other than the hydropsy.

I guess it would just be nice to speak to someone who went through a similar thing.. I'm not really sure why, but just to relate would be nice

In the absence of no maternal disease hydrops is a rare occurance. The chances of you having another baby with the same condition are extremely minimal.

I know there are some strong brave Women here on Belly Belly who have said goodbye to babies with this condition. I hope they can help you with their personal experiences. :hug:

Teagz I am sure you have been asked this but are you rhesus negative? If so did you have anti-D after any episodes of bleeding in pregnancy/loss etc?
Are you Asian? This increases your risk of hydrops.

It was discovered tht Jayvan had died in a routine check up, when my Dr couln't find a HB. So I never had any MC symptoms either. When I was sent for an urgent US the Dr's thought that he was severly disbaled as it was appearing that his limbs were short, but when he was born we found out it was due to his body being so swollen from the edema/hydrops and also because they believe he had died two to three weeks prior to us finding out (so as it was put, he'd started to "rot"). This, and the fact that his body was full of fluid caused by Hydropsy is pretty much all I know, and Dr's here don't seem to know much about it either.
All tests came back normal for both me and Him, and if it wasn't for the hydropsy they believed he would have been a healthy baby.

You probably know that hyddrops causes essentially heart failure due to the heart having to work so hard due to the build up of fluid.

This is sometimes caused by rhesus disease and since the anti -D there are much less babies being born with hydrops. However severe anaemia in the Mama can cause this.

Unfortunately most times the cause is unknown - and the outcome is heartbreaking. :comfort:
