Tooth in the wrong spot?!

DD2 has been dribbling, munching her fingers and slightly more irritable than usual lately. Teething, I conclude, and stock up on teething gel and chew-toys.

This morning I realised that the tooth is not coming through where it should (in the centre of her bottom jaw) - it's sprouting almost halfway toward the back (around the place your canines would come in) and is coming out through the side of her gum instead of the top.
Wth?!
I've taken her to the doctor, who looked at it, looked at me and said, 'I'm not a dentist...' so I thought I would ask you girls before forking out a huge fee for a dentist consultation.
Is this okay? Will her permanent teeth come in properly if her baby teeth are all messed up? Is this an indicator of something else wrong with her jaw/mouth? Should I leave it alone or try to 'fix' it? And, has anybody else had this happen to their babies? I've never heard of it before.

all kids are different! its probably a canine, i assume its white in colour?? its not a blue/purple bulge??

you will find that as her other teeth come up they will push eachother in to position quite naturally.
I was concered about Charlottes bottom teeth too...then I asked a dentist ;)

Hmm, could be an Epstein's pearl? Google it and check it out.

Otherwise, there is generally nothing that you can do about erupting teeth, they come through when and where they want!!! Some kids cross cut, which means their teeth don't come through in the 'correct' order.

^ Thanks, Janie. I think it might actually be one of those Epstein's Pearls - it's three or four tiny white bumps, it looks like a tooth erupting but more like a molar, because the bumps are in a blob rather than in a line the way a straight tooth would appear, if that makes any sense?

I wasn't too concerned about cross-cutting, it was just the fact that it wasn't growing anywhere *near* where a tooth should - it's right down on the side of her gum, near where her lip/cheek starts, kwim?

But thanks for the Epstein's Pearl suggestion, I'm pretty sure it might be that. I'm still trying to get an appt with our regular GP (the doctor who saw her the other day isn't who we usually see and I wasn't really happy with his 'help') so I will get her to have a look and see if she can tell me more about it :)

It sounds as though that might be it :). By all means see if your GP can help you out, but don't be surprised if she can't, GPs are notoriously useless when it comes to dental stuff ;). They just don't spend enough time learning about it!
