As I will be looking into having assisted conception next year we are thinking of getting private health insurance but can't afford it for a family and I was wondering if you can get it just for one person in that family? Can you still have health insurance for myself but not my husband and child? Would the insurance compnay ask why I want it but not the rest of the family as we only want it to assess a private IVF clinic? Also is there a 12month wait until you can use it for that purpose?
You sure can. My girlfriend has PHI only for herself and not DH as she may need fertility treatment too and plus she wants give birth at a private hossie.

Yes you can. Be aware though that if when you have your baby, if you want to deliver at a private hospital you will need to take out family cover, in case your bub needs to go to Special Care etc. If your baby is not covered and is required to be admitted the costs can be astronomical.
I thought there was a 12month wait thats why I wanted to get it asap as we wont be going down the IVF channel for 12months if we do. Well 6months but 6months would soon turn into 12months. So if I was lucky enough and got pregnant naturally (horrible way to describe it) say in 4months time by the time I was birthing I would have had cover for 13months can you use it then? Or is it 12months from conception? Thanks so much for your replies. Going to get onto it right away.
As long as you have had cover for 12 months when you are required to be admitted to hospital you will be fine :). Always remember that not all babies stay put until 40 weeks ;). Good luck with TTC, I hope you don't need to go down the IVF path.
I know this threads a bit old now but I just wanted to add that in all the private health insurance policies I've checked they state that as long as the baby is DUE after the 12 month waiting period then you are covered for care. So If your 12 month is going to be up when your at 35 weeks but you your bub arrives earlier at, say, 28 weeks your insurance will still cover you for birth and care.
I had single private health but I had to change over to family at least a month before my due date so my bub was covered. check it out with your provider hon.
