My ds learnt to do them a week or so ago. I think a friend's 4yo was doing them and he learnt them from her? Anyway, his favorite place to do them is on our bed- which usually results in him flipping himself straight off the edge, at 6 am
DD is on the verge of going over.. have no idea when DS did it.. or if he even has?? LOL.
My DS started doing them at about 16 months. He learnt to do them from watching Jeff do them on the wiggles .
I'm not sure if there's a 'supposed' to age. I think because it's not a developmental something that leads to something else really? Like sitting leads to crawling leads to cruising leads to walking. But somersaulting leads to...handstands? That's just my guess - for all I know it could be a milestone of some sort - but Riv's just learned to at almost 3, so I'd say not, since from 16months to 3 years is a big span!
Clever Pip though! Has he figured out the head tuck? Sometimes Riv forgets and the whole stunt falls sideways, pretty funny.
Livs been doing them for a few months now, after I showed her. She loves them. I dont love them when she somersaults off the couch!!
Make sure he practices tucking in his little chin...I'm so paranoid about neck injuries. Too much funniest home videos...
They DO lead to handstands! DS has been doing a running somersault-y jump onto the couch and ending up in a headstand!
He's been doing somersaults in the water since last year and that's where he first did them before trying them from the pool edge, then on land. I encourage him to do them from the vault at Kindergym, into the foam pit (so, through the air), as well as all over the floor mat so that he realises there are some surfaces better for it than others.
Maybe he was watching throught he fence, Kaz?! When DS first started going to creche the staff were asking if he normally did them, cos he was doing them all over the tambark and they weren't sure what to do with him! I warned them, but they probably thought I was having a mummy boast...no, it was a warning...just like his leaping from tall buildings...they know he can land now!
