Dr G. Reid,Sydney - good surgeon?

I am new here. I would like to thank all of you for sharing your stories. They helped me a lot.

I was wondering if any of you had surgery with dr Geoffrey Reid from Mcquarie Str, Sydney. I am very scared, never had any surgery before and just enrolled for lap with him but I would like to know if he is good. He works with dr Cooper, lots of you mentioned that he is great, but now it is too late for me too change surg and I need advice...

Pls help.

Also he didn't check me at all during my first app , just asked what sort of problems I have and straight away discussed lap. Is it normal? I did think that dr should do the check up when you see him first time. I am so confused...

I am so sad. Nobody replayed :(

It's OK I understand what you are going through, just hope you check this message soon.

I had a consultation with Dr Cooper and he was excellent provided all the information with brochures, provided me with my options and did an internal check and an ultrasound. I was very impressed because he was the second Dr I had seen in the last two weeks. I have done so much research recently and found that both doctors are very well known for their Endo work, I guess you have checked out the ECCA website both Micheal and Reid are there. I also did a search with USA websites and found Aust contacts for endo and I checked the list and it had Dr Reid's name on it. I know that both doctors operate together once a month?, so you get two top doctors but you must check that with the secretary. Depending on your age and symptoms the only true way to diagnose endo is a lap, I only wish I did it years ago. have you had any scans?
Also it also helps if you want to see another doctor so you feel happy.

Hi , I am just about to have surgery with Dr G Reid for a lap and excision of endo. I have had many differant gyno's as I have been struggling with endo and infertility for 7 years. I found Dr Reid to be very good in my first appointment. I can let you know how the surgery goes if that would help to put your mind at rest. I have looked him up on the internet and he appears to have all the right crudentials.

Any surgery is very scarry, especially when they are mucking around in your baby making bits.

I just have to trust him

Paris, I didn't have any scans just internal ultrasound which didn't show anything - by the way, the place I went to have it done was fabulous and so professional, I would recommend it to every woman (it was only for women ultrasound in St Leonard's).
I am glad that he didn't discovered endo on my bowel, so I will cross my fingers that they won't find it either during my lap.
I have colonoscopy next week :( I hope it will go well :cross fingers:

I have my lap at the end of Oct so Nik H I would be very very happy if you could share your experience with me. When is your lap? Which hospital? I will be thinking about you!!!:comfort:


You see I have been worry because he didn't examine me ... don't know why (I had a nice dress on and didn't look like disgusting person to touch :ROFL: :) )

I just saw this thread.

Dr Reid operated on me in April of this year for a lap and excision of endometriomas (chocolate cysts in the ovaries). He has an excellent reputation as a bit of a guru and was recommended by my fertility specialist who is the best! She assisted him in surgery. 6 weeks later I started my first IVF cycle and got a BFP!

I only had a brief appointment with him prior to surgery, we didn't talk much as by then I had diagnosed endo for 18 months so I didn't have too many questions! But he answered any questions knowledgeably. He is a very straight talker which I appreciate.

ETA: It is not unusual that he wouldn't do any kind of physical exam at your appointment. Endo can only be diagnosed through Lap (and very occasionally signs can be seen on an ultrasound, for example my right ovary was fixed onto my pelvis so they could see that). If you were there for another reason - eg pain in vag or cervix or discharge or something, that might justify an exam, but not endo.

The previous year I had surgery with another gyno and I was sooo much happier with the whole Dr Reid experience. Although he did cost me about $800 more than the other Dr, even with private health cover.

Are you going to St Lukes hospital? It was just brilliant (although expensive).

Hi Inka.. I have seen Dr Cooper - Dr Reids off sider/partner who I feel is much more approachable than Dr Reid.. He is a fantastic surgeon and I have had 3 major endo ops with him, both at St Lukes and St Vinnies... He did a brilliant job and we have just completed an IVF cycle and I am now 6 weeks pregnant with our first baby. I had my IVF done in Brisbane as we live in Northern NSW however travel to Sydney to see Dr Cooper. My IVF Dr in Brisbane even said he was the best Endo surgeon in Australia, and on knowing that I had had surgery with him was more confident with my IVF outcome!

Who ever you see be prepared that they are both expensive but both good surgeons.. but personally I am very happy to have been a pt of Dr Coopers.. Good luck!

Firemans, as Inka said in her first post that she knows that Dr Cooper is supposed to be great, but she's with Dr Reid and it's too late to change! I would hate for her to feel that she has made a big mistake by choosing Dr Reid. :redface:

So don't worry Inka, I'm sure that Dr Reid has just as many fans (in fact I met one in the hospital, she was also an Alison and had been a patient of Dr Reid for a few years and raved about him) - he really he is one of the very best, you're in great hands.

It's been so long since I had my first app with my surgeon, gosh 10 years now, but I am pretty sure we went straight down the lap route without too much in the way of a physical examination. They can't tell much from checking you internally and endo can only be diagnosed via lap so it sounds fine.

As long as you like him and trust him that's good.

I think it's a big call for anyone to be the number one, there quite a few good surgeons around, not many, but a few.

I had my surgery on friday at the Liverpool hospital as a puplic patient as I dont have private health insurance. Everything went very well, and I was really well looked after. Dr Reid came and saw me quickly before surgery and had a quick chat and thats all I saw of him. All the people that work in his operating room were lovely. They also made very sure I was pain free when i woke from anaethesia. I really dont think you have anything to worry about. Good luck

Just noticed this thread and wanted to say that Dr Reid was the dr that originally diagnosed my PCOS at Liverpool many many years ago. I wasn't exactly happy with his treatment options or the fact that management options weren't given, but most dr's were like that with PCOS, especially 10 years ago.

One thing I will say is that he is known as one of the leading specialists on endometriosis and I was later treated by his wife as my FS at the Bowral Sydney IVF clinic and I wouldn't often see him there, and he was always friendly.
