What do you consider their first word??

DD says 'mamama' and 'dadada' now. But when do you consider it their first word? She's really just repeating the sounds and also says 'rarara' and 'bababa' which don't mean anything that I'm aware of, lol. But I was on the phone to my Nan the other day and told her this and she said 'oohh...what did she say first' so obviously she thinks she's had her first word!

So do you consider this their first word or when they know what it means or what??

I did hear a definite mum mum today though!! Yay! When she was whinging at me to pick her up, lol.

Lol, I'd consider them first words!!
They do work out what they mean by the time they are about 1, lol!
Mum was earlier...Muuuum!! I demand you right now!!

I would consider them first words, shes saying them.

My DS started saying "arr boo" at 4 mths but i didnt class that as his first word.

Speech Pathologists class it as a 'first word' when it's used in reference to something e.g. Dad comes in the door and your DD says "Dada".

Jazzy's word was mum.... and that was lying on the floor, looked at Shel and whinged mummumum!

She's was saying bubbubbub before then but that was just a sound. Some people count sounds as words, but they're only really words when they have meaning.

Yeah, that's what DH and I were thinking, they're just sounds bc she says other things like 'rarara' and that doesn't mean anything.

But I think she is getting mum now bc she keeps saying mumumum when she's whinging and has 'crawled' (pulled herself along the floor) over to me and wants me to pick her up or something.
