8 Mth Old - Not crawling - is that normal?!

i know you lovely knowledgeable ladies will be able to shed some light for me :)

My DD is just over 8 months and not crawling yet. - An acquaintance of mine who's daughter is 1 day older than my DD is forever texting me to tell me how her DD is already crawling everywhere and pulling herself into a standing position etc. and how she's surprised my DD isnt doing the same thing considering she hasn't had "half the troubles her DD has had (full hip displaysia, in a brace for 4 months etc" - now, this person isnt really a friend of mine in the true sense of the word - she is actually my sisters friend who has decided that since our DD's are only day apart it will be fun to compare and watch our girls grow up. - Now, in a normal setting, i wouldnt be friends with her cause she's just too high strung and competitive for my liking :rolleyes:

Anyway my question is, is it normal that my DD is not crawling yet at the age of 8 months? - she goes into the full crawl position, rocks back and forward and even moves backwards, but shows no interest in learning to go forwards. if she wants something she will roll to get to it. - i guess im just worried that shes "behind" - although, i daresay its more because of this "friend" forever texting and asking if DD is crawling yet that its' got me concerned :redface:

any feedback would be great!

If she's doing that, then it won't be too much longer.

Ruby was commando crawling at 9 months and now in the last few days at just on 10 months is crawling properly.

my Ds3 was nearly 9 months before he would crawl.. He couldn't even roll over till 12 months. (just lazy ) lol..

Thanks girls :) - I know its my irrational mummy brain talking! - Just needed some validation that she is perfectly normal and not behind :D

Oh my goodness, I don't mind when people compare stages their babies are at but it annoys me when people compare in a bad way. I can't believe she said "considering she hasn't had "half the troubles her DD has had". Babies do everything at their own pace and when they are ready. My DD1 crawled when she was just over 9 months old.

Yes, i think that's what got me thinking - I mean yes, her DD has overcome some huge adversities but it made me feel like i was doing something wrong or there was something wrong with my DD!

she's fine! my niece didn't crawl till she was 10mths old, then she walked the next day! Lol

a friends DD also didn't crawl till she was 13mths - they will do it in their own time ;)

Geez it irritates me when people assume because your child isn't doing what their child is doing it means your child is abnormal!!!

8 months and not crawling is fine.

Miss M was a week off 10 months when she began crawling. DS was a week off 9 months - so even siblings are different. Some of my baby buddies kids were crawling or walking at 9 months - and Miss M was still content to sit on the floor and roll around. Suited me fine, means I only had one child to chase instead of two ;)

DD's friend who is a month younger than DD started crawling at 10.5 months, she is now taking steps by herself & DD doesnt yet (DD was crawling around 8-9mths)

My DD was 14 months when she started crawling (she was expected to have developmental delays) the same week she learnt to pull herself up and walk around furniture and got her first 2 teeth!

As everyone else has said it is perfectly normal. It also does not indicate how far along they will reach their other developmental milestones. My DS didn't crawl till he was 9 months but he walked at 10 months. Most likely your little one has just been concentrating on other things. :)

I have a nine month old that's not crawling yet. Not really even trying to. He just doesn't show much interest in getting to other places. When he finally figured out that he could roll to get somewhere, he only did it for a week, and then stopped (pretty much like everything else he does!). He's just starting to cruise around on the furniture (but mainly us), but also doesn't pull himself up much and waits for us to help him pull himself up. It's completely normal and there's no rule book that says babies must do XXX by a certain age to be "normal". There's no such bloody thing as normal!

I think your DD is doing fabulously, she sounds as though she is really close to crawling, up on her knees and rocking, she may do that for a while and then one day take off on you :D

It is such an exciting time, I bet you are like us egging her on, we have a real cheer squad happening when DD has looked as though she is close to crawling, but we also know that she will do it in her own time, I ma not worrying about when it will be and I am not putting "dates" or "ages" on it as such as there is soooo much variation in when babies reach milestones. Instead of getting about and moving DD had really developed her fine motor skills, and she has had a very impressive pincer grip for quite some time :D

It can be hard dealing with people who are constantly comparing what your child and their child are doing, I ask, and get excited for others when there littlies learn something new, but within our Mothers Group there is soooo much variation in what each bub is good at.

In a couple of years time no one is even going to think oh so when did you daughter crawl, walk... talk etc :doh: We focus so heavily on their milestones while they are little it can be a little consuming and stressful! But know within yourself that she is developing beautifully and you will be wishing that she wasn't crawling or walking about as they can dissappear from within your sights sooo quickly!

No point comparing with my DD as she has only just learnt to comando crawl at 15 months, but she has significant Gross Motor Delays due to being too flexible ;)

My DS didn't crawl properly until 10 months. Up until then he used to grip the ground in front of him and pull himself along his belly! Our neice (DS's cousin) was born a month after DS yet she crawled a month before him (so when she was 8 months). They are both running around together on their feet now and you cannot tell who crawled or walked first!! Your 'friend' is being really lame by comparing them like that - they are individuals and do things when they are ready. Don't worry about it!!

ds1 didnt crawl til 11 months. He only just started sitting at 9 months

Babies do things in their own time and they will do things in different orders too so she will probably do other things earlier than this woman's child.

Thanks Nai :) - Funny you mention your DD being a talker, because my DD is very vocal, always chattering about something and practicing her Dada Mumma sounds!
