Passports ????????

it took me a while to work out what thread i would put this post in! lol

I currently have a British passport in my maiden name as I needed to renew it over a year before our honeymoon, and as i live in Australia didnt want to pay again just because i changed my name....................................(where is this going you ask)..................................

I now have been granted citizenship in Australia and have to apply for a passport as my visa is no longer valid

My Q is i want my Australian passport in my married name, but can i do this? can you have two travel documents in two different names???( i wouldn't have thought so??) I know i can have both passports though.

Wouldn't i need to book flights in my passport name????

Please can someone offer any advise

If you changed your name when you got married then your Australian passport would need to be issued for your married name. Because your British passport is in your maiden name I assume that you would need to carry your marriage certificate and change of name documents with you when travelling.

I would think if all your other id is in your married name, then yeah, your Aust passport will be issued in that name too.

As for travelling... it just depends which passport you intend travelling on. You don't produce both passports at customs.

I would make sure they are in the same name before travelling again.

I leave Australia on my Aussie passport and enter the UK on my british one, and vice versa. That way I don't need a visa to enter either country..

heather - I did that and produced the wrong one coming home LOL. I tried to leave the UK on my UK passport and they quizzed me about a visa for australia.. and I just went... oh... here... i have another passport... looked so dodgy LOL.

Plus I was warned with doing that, that they can hold you up here when you get back, because there is no stamp in your Aust passport for where you have been. Didn't happen to me tho.

This is what i intend to do and what my DH does, he also has both due to his father being British! he was asked how long he was in UK for when we returned first time, he told them 3 years and they quizzed him, then he showed his British passport and everything was fine,.......however a friend of his traveled to Egypt and when they asked him for his passport he pulled out three, they did not like this, one Egyptian, British and American!!

so i will say it depends what country you are traveling too and their understanding of duel nationalities. i have no concern with using both when traveling from UK to Aus.

Just want to know if i can have them in two different names, i will get a new UK one in my married name but not while i still have 5 years on my passport! and i HAVE to get an Australian passport as my visa will expire when i get citizenship! If i leave Australia on my Aus passport then they will check this against my ticket name, if i leave the UK on my British they will do the same and it will not be the same????

Loula you can do an amendment to your current UK passport to change it to your married name without having to do a full renewal of passport.

I might be having a blonde moment but i didnt complete any change of name papers when i got married??? should i have?

nah.. no paperwork. But if you've changed your name on other ID's like drivers licence and your married name is what you are known by, then your passport will be issued in that name too.

basically whatever name you apply for the aussie passport in....all your supporting ID needs to be in that name also......I had hassles when I changed mine, had to go change medicare, drivers license and bank accounts so everything was in the same name on the application.

lol we have been married for 4 years! everything is in my married name just not my British passport!so getting my Aussie one in that name will not be a problem

Sorry didn't mean to confuse you. If you have an Australian marriage certificate that is usually sufficient to change your name on your drivers licence, medicare, etc. In some cases, such as getting married overseas, you may be required to get a change of name certificate issued instead.

Where are you going? If you are using your Aus passport you should be fine, but if you are using both I would either get the UK passport updated or take marriage certificate OR change of name certificate with you

On the subject of passports.. I nearly fell off my chair this evening when I found out it's going to cost us over $400 to get me and the kids passports! I thought it was only about $120 for mine! But then.. it is over 10years ago that I got my last one hahah...

I think they will change it free of charge but not after 12 mths after the marriage? and not an overseas passport.

I will only travel on my Aus passport but do go home to the UK every two years so will need both then

Do you really need it for the UK tho? Just travel on your aussie one. Or are you planning on working or anything over there? No visas are needed or anything for the aussie passport.

ETA: from memory i think the only benefit of entering on the UK passport is bypassing the longer queues at customs. (it's been a while for me tho :) )

True never thought of that lol! if we have a family i hope to stay there for 12 mths but dont intend to work
