DP seems to be finding it hard to hear me (!) and thinks he may need his ears cleaning out. They always look quite waxy.
He's a bit scared of going to the doctor. He is afterall, a man, but wants to know if getting your ears cleaned out hurts?
Anyone done it?
My DH has. They syringe warm water in there and it flushes out the hard plugs of wax. Reccons it doesn't hurt, just feels a tad weird, but says if he had an ear infection it might.
I have seen it being done (I was in the treatment room having blood taken when a doc came in with a patient to do it) The doc got a piece of wax the size of a marble out of this old man's ear - it was gag inducing cos it was really brown/black dirty wax. It didn't seem to hurt him at all - she did it next to the sink and used a kidney dish to collect the wax as it came out. I am guessing she put some sort of liquid in to make the wax come out - sorry I am not more helpful on the actaul procedure. The patient was really pleased he could finally hear tho:lol:
I've had it done twice, had the flu and an infection and the doc suggested it. It doesn't hurt but I found it unpleasant, loud rushing water in my ear. It's nothing to be scared of though, there's not supposed to be pain involved.
Sorry, this isn't a good story. My dad has had his eardrums perforated several times by different Doctors over the years trying to clean his ears out. I think Dad is just a super wax producer with paper thin eardrums. Anyway, perforated eardrums do heal eventually but it's very painful and unpleasant. It's probably not a common complication but I just thought I'd throw another story into the mix. There's always a risk with anything.
Yep, had it done too. The night before I used drops (Waxsol I think??) to help soften the wax and the next day the doc flushed them out. It was painful for me but I have sensitive ears and HATE anything near them. It feels weird mainly.
Have you thought about ear candling? They're a thin hollow stick that you put in your ear, light the end of them (the end that sticks out LOL) and they're meant to help clear the wax too. I think natural health places sell them and some beauty places do it too. Just a thought?

Does'nt hurt just feels weird. They use warm water and it does sound loud rushing through your ears.
But it is the best feeling when you can hear properly again - crystal clear !
Only takes a couple of minutes.

You can get ear candles at health food stores. My dad swears by them (Harley riding tattoo'd shearer who wouldn't be caught dead at the docs, lol).
You lay down with them in your ear & they draw the wax out.
I've never seen him use them, so not too sure, but he's always got them around, coz he's always got blocked ears.
my hubby uses these and he swears by them.:
when i was little i had lots of ear problems and mum used to syring my ears out all the time. it doesn't hurt but is just a bit weird. if the wax is hard then you often can't get it out. a few drops of olive oil for a few nights in the ear to soak helps that.

Most dr's refuse to do it if you have an infection (this is mostly when it will hurt).
Personally I haven't had any ill effects from it (but as a PP mentioned, it can perforate ear drums).
