Ergo question
I have an Ergo sport which is great! Elijah loves it and usually falls asleep at some stage when we use it. They don't come with manuals/books anymore and it's all online. So I had a look and didn't realise that you aren't supposed to use them with bub facing out like you can with a Baby Bjorn?? Is this correct or can I?? I'm not ready to put him on my back yet and like him on front still. He is happy enough facing me and will sleep (like yesterday) so that isn't really an issue, just more so he can see really.

No not ment to face them out in the ergo, I have seen people do it thought and there kids love it but when I tryed with DS he screamed must not have been comfy for him, i didnt even get it done up on both sides.
I love using it on my back but cant do that unless I have DH there to help me get him on there.

Nope not to be used like that babe. Miss M would still be happy on my front at 14 months, cept a big old fat gut gets in the way.

I'm so excited, we just ordered our Ergo today!!! Can't wait to get it!

Ahhh bugger, poo, bum lol. Oh well, he still likes it anyway and so do I :) He's 8kg now and was fine :)

yep not able to use the ergo facing out... but my DS still loved facing inwards until i couldnt do it anymore when i was pg (ie he would have been 19 months at that stage)

You can use it in a hip carry though. Facing out is not recommended primarily for two reasons - one is psychological (the baby is unable to avoid excessive or distressing stimuli by turning in to face away from it), the other is purely comfort for the wearer. Facing out pulls the baby's weight away from the body and puts strain on the shoulders and back.
A hip carry allows them to face you but still see a lot more than what they would in a front carry. HTH!

Suse, thanks, that certainly makes sense re: weight distribution. I'd never have thought of the psychological aspect though, wow! True though.
Is the hip position comfortable?? I find the front position good but it is difficult when trying to lift a toddler too lol. Kinda gets in the way worse than a preg belly! I'm guessing that sleeping in the hip position probably isn't an option?

Personally I've not found that wearing any SSC in a hip carry is as comfortable as it is in a two shouldered carry, or as comfortable as a single shoulder carrier. If I want a supportive hip carry I use a wrap or a RS, or my scootababy if I know that I'm going to be carrying all day. But a carrier is going to be best at the things it's designed for (in the Ergo's case, two shouldered carries), it may also be able to do other things (like a hip carry), but it is not necessarily going to be as good as something that is specifically designed for that thing. If that makes sense.
Sleeping in a hip carry is fine (generally, I don't know about Ergos specifically, I never hip carried in mine). E has slept in my scootababy and in RSs on many an occasion. As far as the baby is concerned, there's no real difference in the way their body is positioned. You might find it less comfortable over a long period though, as the weight is distributed unevenly unlike in a front or back carry, and you may need to support the head a bit more. But you can also scoot them back to the front if they are looking a bit dozy.
