Wants to sit at 3 months?

Hi,

Just need some reassurance. My girl has been wanting to sit for the past 2 weeks though I feel that she is way too young to be sitting, supported obviously. When I have her on the mat she would enjoy tummy time for a short while but that position doesn't allow her full use of her arms so she whinges until I turn her over. When she is on her back she would lift her head off the mat and appears as if she wants to be up. If I happen to be holding her hands she would pull until she is upright. DH doesn't think I should let her sit for so long as it might do her back damage. But if I dont let her sit up she would cry and carry on. What should I do? Alternative to this would be to carry her, then she would be upright. This is also something she likes because she could see the world better.

i let DD guide me - she wants to sit up, i sit her up. she wants to stand, i let her stand. i do tend to encourage her to sit rather than standing at this stage, but i don't force her to lay down. she leans back on me so she's semi-reclined when she's tired.

all babies develop differently. as long as you support her, you should be fine hun

My DD could sit unsupported at 3.5 months. She had the strength to do it and was perfectly happy that way. I always put pillows around her so if she fell she landed softly but it was great she loved sitting up and playing with her toys and it was great for me as she was able to entertain herself.

Have you tried her in a rocker/bouncer? My DD lived in hers at that age. They can sit up and see everything while comfortably supported, examine toys that you dangle above them and saves you holding them. I used to carry it into different rooms as I moved around the house and would even take it to friends homes so that DD could play happily (and see the world) when out and about.

Thanks BG, It appears you and bubs are doing very well. You know I am already thinking about having another one. All the long years of waiting and I am enjoying every bit of it.

wow Pixie didn't think any babies could sit so early. My little girl enjoys sitting on mytummy, me supporting her with me thighs and hands under armpits. She spends many minutes playing with my buttons and sometimes boobs, :lol:

:yeahthat: my DS was sitting up about 4 or 5 mnths unassisted. I propped pillows all around him for a couple of months as he did lose his balance when he was playing but he would sit up ok for ages.
I also followed his lead and spent many hours just sitting there with DS in between my legs initially until I was confident enough to put the pillows around him so I could get a few things done. This then progressed to holding him while he would stand :lol: the things we do for our little ones...

AR likes to sit (she was 3 mths yesterday) - she needs a bit of help, but often when she is reclining she will pull her head & shoulders forward, often to the point where she overbalances. We help her 'sit up' quite a bit - it won't do them any harm as long as you give them a hand.
From memory my other three sat unaided at about 4-5 months (I think) & it looks like she will do the same.
I think what BG said is pretty much it - let them guide you with what they want...

My eldest was 3 months when she was sitting unaided! crawling by 5 months and walking unaided by 9 months, apart from it looking totally wriong as she was soooo tiny, she was a happy kid and hasnt stopped moving since!

Mine all got too bored by about that age when they were down & I always had then up in the pram or rocker. DD2 was sitting unsupported at 4 months, so she should be ok with support.
