LT-TTC 2 years + non motile sperm cells!!

newby needing some help please re- non motile or low sperm count!!
hi every one, i am a newby, thanks to google discovered this excellent site. Very pleased to see good people devoting their time in maintaining this site... have also started a thread on TTC as well, and just realised it should have been here! sorry mods..

i am 38years of age and wife is the same age, we have 2 children but been trying for a 3rd for the past 5 years and had no joy!!!. Recently have had some test done and wifes in the clear , but i have been told after a siemen analysis that my sperm cells are non motile, ie cannot swim!! or struggle to climb up!!, thats how the doc put it !!!.

can anyone recommend or point me to the right direction for rectifieng low sperm count or curing non motile sperm!!!. ive been looking on google and theirs all sorts of herbs and pills out their , but not too keen to try them as some can do more damage than actually cure .
read a lot about MACA POWDER, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds, ZINC suplements and . and other sort of stuff - has anyone on this site tried anything or can recommend anyhting please!!

My husband has low motility but a good count. The specialist told him to use menevite which you can get from the Chemist (well alot of chemists) its specific to male fertility and similar to those available to women. Its about $70 for a 3month supply bottle.
He also said some men are at risk of sperm damage due to their lifestyle and jobs. For example truck drivers especially as the motor is often under the seat which keeps the testicles too hot and damages the sperm and sperm production. So by trying to keep the testes cool, no tight undies etc is also benificial to increase the quanity and quality of whats produced.
I am not sure on diet except to avoid cigarettes, beer and coffee, coke/fizzy drinks or caffeine stuff.
Sperm takes 3months to regenerate so unfortunately its not something you can do for a few weeks and see improvements. By seeing what things you might do that could be effecting your sperm health and reducing them might see a dramatic improvement in 3months. They say what you do now will effect the sperm you have 3months from now if that makes sense.
Are all the sperm non motile or just a large percentage of them?
IVF is always an option with sperm abnormalities as they can take a select good quality sperm and inject it straight into the egg which maximises the fertilise rate. Of course this isn't an easy option as it is very costly and does not guarantee success in achieving pregnancy.
Good luck. Hopefully some changes will help improve sperm count and motility.

Emmy thank you very much for your reply- much much appreciated. As i am in the UK My sprm 50% is motile, but rest isnt. As i am in the UK i dont think i can get MENEVITE her. I thnik it is only in the Ausy market. If i send you $70 + shipping cost , would you be kind enoough to post some to me please..

I'm sure that you can buy other brands with similar ingredients in the UK.

Zinc is good for swimmers.

I'm sure there are equivalent products available in the UK to Australia. Customs might be bit funny about pills and potions being sent overseas. If you went to a chemist to discuss it with them I'm sure they would be able to help. You need to be aware that certain vitamins etc react with other medicines so it's important to discuss your individual needs with a professional.

When your doctor told you you had non-motile sperm he/she should have discussed in more detail with you could do if anything to improve this. I'd be giving the doctor another call!

I could do that for you but it would probably be easier for you to order it online and get them to post it out. Ill try find an Australia Chemist outlet where you can buy it online and have it posted out to the UK direct from the shop. Ill go try find a place that sells it and add the link.
Oh yeah I dont know how you would go with customs. I can tell you all the ingredience in the menevite so you can find a similar product in the UK.

I agree with Lenny re seeing the Dr again.
50% motile is still ok to achieve pregnancy to my knowledge if the abnormal forms are not a high percentage and the count is ok. My husbands was 21% normal forms so 79% abnormal and 45% motility (30% moving forward quickly, 15% forward slow the rest not moving (dead or staying in the one spot) I think the menevite helps more with the motility then the count itself but I am not 100% sure. Some of the other girls and theire DH might know more.
Although I think the menevite (or something similar) is a good start and will most likely improve your sperm quality it is not guaranteed success (if only it was I'd be very happy right now) .
There is a site I also use baby and bump. I am not sure if its a UK site or not but there seems to be alot of people on it from the UK. Maybe if you ask a question on it they will be able to tell you a product local to you that is the same or similar to what menevite is.

I just saw your post and thought that I might be able to help... My husband and I are in a similar situation (I was checked out by a Fertility Specialist and was ok) wheras my husband came back with a low count (2million) with poor morphology and motility (motility was at 50% with our worst reading at 45%).

We have recently undergone IVF and have had success with our 3rd egg transfer. On our 1st stimulated cycle we did not particularly have good results, however things picked up considerably on our second stimulated cycle due to some major lifestyle changes for both my husband and myself.

On this second cycle, my husband's motility went up from 50% to 75% which I believe gave us our success (along with a bit of luck of course!).

Here is what my husband did:

Had a menevite a day
Stopped drinking any caffeine related drinks
No alcohol (this was the hardest!)
Stopped eating refined sugars (no cakes, pies etc - plus checked food labels for sugar content as you would be surprised at the amount of sugar in some so called 'healthy products')
No take out like McDonalds and KFC
Drank more water
Drank a glass of orange juice a day
More fruit and vege
Ate a handful of pumpkin seeds a day (very good for sperm)
Went to acupuncture once a week

Hi woody - just to clarify - 50% motility is actually pretty normal, not low at all. The official cut off is 60% but most clinics consider anything above 40% to be fine - so I wouldn't stress at all over it. If you are interested in doing something, zinc is the key ingredient so I would head to a chemist for more advice.

thanks for your post - my husband and i are in the same boat as what you were - i am fine but hubby has some strong backward swimming sperm! I however am about to start next month our 3rd cycle as the last 2 failed. we had a daughter through IVF and it happened first pop so i was fairly gutted when i had these failed cycles. I am going to take on what your hubby did and tell my hubby he needs to follow this and see how we go. The one thing i have not worked out is the sperm counts etc are exactly the same as nearly 4years ago when we started IVF for the first time and that worked - maybe becuase i have got older, my eggs are not as good?

No worries :).

Try not to worry too much about it taking longer this time round.... my FS explained that in our category (ICSI with me being ok) that we just have to wait for the right fertilized egg to come along. The nurses also advised that they see allot of couples get it 1st go 1st time round and then it takes a few the next so all sounding normal for you and I think your little eggies will still be good to go!

I really do think the change in our lifestyle had allot to do with our success on the third transfer. It was actually our 2nd stim cycle and we got a much better result than our 1st stim. With the 1st stim, we got 19 eggs, fertilized 12, however by day 5 we had 1 blast to transfer and 2 for the freezer. The 1st transfer did not work so we had a FET, where 1 egg did not survive the de-freeze and the other was transferred with a BFN result.

On the second stim with the lifestyle changes, we got 27 eggs, fertilised 14, and by day 5 transferred 2 x Blasts and froze 5 eggs. My FS explained that from day 1-4ish the egg does all the fertilization work and from day 4ish the sperm takes over. We lost the majority of our eggs on the 1st stim from approx. day 3-4-5 and yet on the 2nd stim we must have had stronger/ better quality sperm as 7 made it to blast (2 transferred and 5 frozen).

Another things was that I knew we were doing everything we possibly could to make this one a success and I think that it really helped to take the pressure off both of us and our attitude became what will be will be (although I still went crazy during the 2WW as you do, he, he!)

thanks for the encouragement and your experiences - it makes it alittle easy to deal with the negative results when i can see it can work. After reading your story yesterday i went online and purchased some Menenit for dh. We are in NZ on holiday at the moment but didn't want to wait till we got back to aussie. We will be making some changes and hopefully this will help. Here's to a final and successful next cycle!

m just read ur problem woody may u've the 3rd child now bcoz it's from long time :) but i want to add my note about that ....i think the clomid it's good in this case .it's effect on the motility of sperm while there're good count of nonmotile ones
sometimes in these cases if there's no improvement in the motility u can resort to procedure named TESA it's testicular extraction sperm aspiration that's extract sperms from testes then use them in ivf lab to inject the eggs ....may be it's better to consider this way last solution for the prob.

We're from the UK too (just moved to Oz) and I can tell you for the same issues my husband took Proxeed (or maybe its spelled Proxceed?). You can buy it online in the UK and I can tell you he has had 3 SA tests and after the second 1 we saw an improvement in the motility of his sperm. Google it and you should be able to find a supplier, I think even the great auction site sells the stuff directly from the UK.

I know this is an old post but I thought I'd mention it in case it helps someone else.
