Any vets out there that can help...scabs on my dog

My dog Max who is a poodle cross shihtzu has been doing alot of scratching and nibbling lately.

Anyway DP commented that he had some scab wounds on his back. So I checked them out and noticed that there was about 3 in the area on his back where his tail meets.

I shaved the area with the clippers and noticed more and more. I ended up shaving half of his fur off and he has some on his belly too.

I have a vet appointment at 8:30am tomorrow but I am worried. He is sleeping now but they look really nasty. :( Poor puppy.

He doesn't have fleas and both my dogs are regularly treated with Sentinal spectrum once a month and have a capstar tablet if I notice fleas. They havent had fleas for over a year!

My poor puppy. What do you think is wrong with him? How did he get this? I know I should get answers in the morning but I am worried.

My mum said they might be hot spots that he has got infected by licking and nibbling at them and scratching them. When I rang the vet they said it might be mites.

Has anyone ever had this on their dog? Is it going to cost me a fortune??

I have a long haired dog and she gets scabs like that when she has matts in her hair which she nibbles at if they're hurting her. I usually have her clipped so she doesn't get them anymore.

It could also be an allergy to the food the dogs are eating, a plant in the yard, cleaning products you use if they're inside dogs or shampoo you wash them in etc.

Thanks Tink, His hair is really thick and curly and gets matts in it alot. Think I am going to have to keep him short all the time now.

I think he is a highly allergic dog as well.

hmm ali sounds like something has irritated the skin and caused your furbaby to scratch so hard
have you got any wondering dew in the garden?? A well know culprit!!
or perhaps sandflies from sand??
an oatmeal doggiewash, short hair and a bland diet for a bit such as a chicken and rice diet that is low in inflammatory food should help and the vet should be able to give pup an anti-histimine shot to settle it down and perhaps some a/biotics if they are infected!

Well, it turned out to be a flea allergy. He has no fleas though.... :dunno:

The vet said something about a flea could have jumped on him and bitten him and jumped off but I didnt know that could happen.

He is on the mend now.

I lost his tablets (that cost me a fortune) today and just found them 10minutes ago! YaY!

Cost me $145 all up.

Glad he has sme relief now.

Glad he's on the mend now! I was going to say it sounded like an allergy...

My dog is allergic to NZ Christmas Trees (the ones that blossum) We were renting a house off our parents and there was about 5 or 6 of them, quite big too, and we ended up chopping them all down because they were just giving him so much troubles...

Although, a week later someone from the council came to see us about them... and apparently they are quite expensive and they were willing to buy them off us to relocate for $100 bucks each :rolleyes:
