should i take him to the dr's??

For the last 4 weeks or so, ds has had a runny nose, at times it was a bit green which I know is a sign of infection. But he didn't have a temp and he was eating and drinking normally so i left it at that.

His nose is still runny, but its turning a clear colour now. But over the last few days he has developed a cough, which seems to be only when he is lying down. He has been running around normally and with no coughing when he runs alot, only when he goes to bed..

should i take him to the dr or is it just a cold?? He doesn't have a temp, he is normal, no lethargy, plenty of wee and poo (yesterday afternoon it was a tad runny) he is eating and drinking..

I personally think if they are doing everything else normally then leave it to run its course.. If he starts showing any symptoms like tiredness, green nose again or runny poos ect ect. then I would go..

your doing everything i would do and i wouldn't be to concerned enless symptoms got worse but if its not to much trouble for piece of mind maybe take to dr.

Personally i would maybe just give the Dr's a call, maybe have a chat with the nurse and explain what is happening, just for the fact it has hung around for so long, maybe even nurse on call, just for peace of mind as squidipa said.

DD gets chest infections quite often when she's teething etc and the runny nose is horrid right before it but then settles and she gets stuck with a cough, mainly at night, the only thing i worry about is if it goes from a standard infection to bronchiolitis or something.
Have you tried a vaporiser in his room?

if it was me i would ask the doctor my DS had a runnynose for ages then a cough started at night,i was using a vaporiser and putting baby vicks on.
i went to the doctors and they put him on some ventolin not because hes astmatic but becsuse it would open his air way and make it easier to breathe,i also used a vaporiser after a week of the ventolater and the the ventolin his cough was gone and i havent needed the ventolin since.
after so long might be worth a go

if I went to the Dr's everytime DD1 has a runny nose and cough I would live there! She doesn't do to well in winter she is a summer baby that's for sure. If the cough isn't disturbing him too much and he is still happy then I would leave him be, if he starts to get upset or the snotty nose gets green all the time then think about taking him.

This has happened to my DS, I mentioned it the next time I was at the Dr, she prescribed a nasal steriod spray. It seems to have help him.

If his nose is running clear & the coughing is mostly when lying down then I would guess it is post-nasal drip - just a bit of stuff running from his nose down into his throat & tickling it.
Demazin might help if it's really bad at night, also propping the mattress a bit if you can.

I wouldn't worry too much unless he's having trouble catching his breath,really wheezing or running a temp for more than a few days - but do trust your instincts if you think he needs to go, then take him :)

It sounds as if he is doing fine at home. I don't think it really warrants a consultation with a doctor.

thanks everyone for your replies. I didn't go to the dr's, i will just follow my mummy instincts :) I went out and bought him a vapouriser, so thanks everyone for that suggestion. Hope it makes him sleep a bit better. He didn't really cough at all today during his nap so thats a good sign :) God I love belly belly, where else can you get great responses from such lovely ppl at any time of the day :)

Hope he's better soon, you will find the vaporiser will prob make a HUGE difference.. DD has hers going at the moment even during her morning nap as she is VERY blocked up.
