I just don't know WHY he's waking....
For the last 4-6 weeks, Peter has taken to waking at night, every 2-3 nights (he'd been sleeping right through for the last 4 months or so). Its any time between 1-3am and cries and cries and the only thing that gets him back to sleep is a bottle. I just cannot work out WHY he is waking. His cry is not obviously one of pain or fear or hunger....its just crying. We try the dummy, and patting and rocking, panadol and anything else we can think of. He will go back to sleep if we rock him, but he wakes the second we put him down.
So needless to say we always end up resorting to giving him a bottle, which I think is now becoming a habit.
Last night we tried a kind of "comforted crying" approach rather than giving a bottle- whenever we have done this, he has protested for about 20 minutes, then gone to sleep. Last night was an hour! In desperation we ended up giving a bottle again and he went straight to sleep!
I just wish I knew WHY he was crying so I knew what to do about it. He is getting molars through, but they don't seem to be causing him too much trouble and panadol doesn't seem to assist in getting him back to sleep. He's very clingy, so maybe separation anxiety?
Argh, any ideas? Our next plan is to continue to give him a bottle and gradually water it down so it isn't such an incentive to wake anymore. (this is how we weaned him off his night bottle initially). Any other suggestions gratefully appreciated!
