My little man is almost too big for his bassinet, and it's almost time for him to move into his cot, :cry: just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to make the transition easier or how they went about introducing the cot and how long it took their LO's to settle in it?
DD was always in her cot for night sleeps when we brought her home, only used her bassinette for day sleeps. Can you start by putting your DS in there for either night sleeps or day sleeps? I can't really remember how we did it, I think I just decided one day to put her in her cot for day sleeps as well! The last week or so she has been having some day sleeps in the bassinette, although she has almost outgrown it, just because our bedroom gets so hot during summer weather.
Is your little one wrapped? I think as long as everything else stays the same, it's just he is sleeping in a cot, he should be ok, although he may be unsettled until he realises that this is a place to sleep too. Being in such a big space might be a little overwhelming too.
Sorry that probably wasn't much help! DD is fairly easy going, we just do stuff and she goes along with it most of the time! All I can suggest is just try it and see what he is like!
i've read some people say that they've put the bassinet inside the cot at first & then into the cot itself after a little while.
we tried the transition at 3 months & had a couple of good nights (well, the same as previously) - we did as ss_storm suggested & kept everything else the same about bedtime (bath, feed, sleeping bag & then bed). but then DS got sick & things went a bit haywire. his sleeps then got even worse at around 4 months. he's back in the bassinet for now - i needed it for my sanity. not sure whether it was the transition to the cot or just the 4 month sleep regression but i'm planning to try him in there for day sleeps & then move onto night sleeps when we feel comfortable.
When it was time for DD to move out of our room and into a cot I started by first putting the basinette in her room for day sleeps for a few days (or until she was ok with that). Once she was ok then I did night sleeps. I had to put a blanket over the side bars near her head to start with (I think the open space may have been daunting) but only did that for a week. HTH
We started by putting both DD's in the cot for day sleeps and then onve they were ok with that then they went into the cot for night sleeps.
I was worried about this when DS started getting too big for his bassinet. Then, one day I put DS down in his cot (I did every now and then if I needed to duck off to the toilet, etc), and he looked tired - I thought, maybe he'll go to sleep... and he did! He slept in his cot every sleep, day and night, after that without any problems!
It may end up being a lot easier than you think :).
We used to put DS into his cot for day sleeps too, and the bassinet at night, he was therefore used to the cot and transitioned without a problem when the time came :)
Thanks for the ideas, I think I'll try him next week in his cot for day sleeps then when he's used to it, move him in at night.
