Carpal Tunnel
For the last few days ive had a shearing pain from my wrist to my thumb, then down my hand to my pointing finger.
After chatting to someone of the phone about it I went researching and it sounds like she said, Carpal Tunnel
GREAT!!!!! one of the 'prescriptions' for it is to rest and not use the effected hand.....highly unlikely seeing I use my hands for work and have alot on my plate atm.
Has anyone else had this and used natural therapies to 'heal' it?

Maz, i have a cure!
I always feel odd posting about my dad, but anyway! He is a massage therapist and has cured many many peoples carpel tunnel who were told they had to have surgery. I can organise for you to see him next time you're down if you like. x

I tend to get is whilst pregnant. I went to see an osteo for other pregnancy things and found she was able to help with the carpal tunnel. So you could give an osteo a try to see if that helps you. I also used a wrist support during the times I did not need to do a huge amount with my hand.

if you put a bandage or splint on it, it will reduce the pain so that you can function. the best thing i've had is, like ange said, deep tissue massage to help release the nerve bundle. i get it frequently due to having surgery on my wrist, so i have learnt to release it myself. you may find it hurts like a biatch when it's massaged (though mine may be painful due to the surgery i've had and the resultant scar tissue that i have there) - but when it has released, and the ouchies from the probing settle, the relief is awesome.
if you can get your wrist stabilised, the pain in your fingers should ease a fair bit
if you're still having trouble before the xmas meet up, let me know and i'll bring a spare splint with me that you can take home - i sometimes find that i only need it strapped for a day or so so that the inflammation goes down - so you can have it on hand at home...

I have terrible carpal tunnel to the point where I can't peel vegies or open jars, or even wring out a sponge some days. I have to sleep with my hand in a certain position so trhat I don't wake up with pins and needles. I've heard that wearing wrist splints at night can help. I haven't found anything that has helped me though :( It's op time for me.

Maz,
I get carpal tunnel really bad when I am pregnant which usually lasts for a few months post partum.
During my last pregnancy I sought out help from an acupuncturist... she was fantastic and after just 1 session my CT never returned... it has been gone ever since!
I highly recommend going for acupuncture for CT and have been telling everyone! I want to go for it again for other issues I have.

Hun, get a proper diagnosis first, just to make sure because you want it treated correctly.
xoxoxo

I too am a CT girl while pg, although I can get it occasionally other times. Fortunately for me it was generally during the night and only on one hand. But I can definitely recommend a splint for relief - wear overnight and it might help - certainly can't harm you if you're not sure it's CT.
Would be interested in acupuncture cure for it - it does seem like something that acupuncture should work for!

I think i am developing carpal tunnel syndrome. i am 26 weeks pregnant but have had tingles and weakness for a couple of weeks. My mum had it and eventually had surgery on both hands, but i'm hoping mine will dissappear after bub is born.
Has anyone tried icing or using heat on the wrists? I am thinking if there is swelling, using ice is probably the first step to try.
Is it worth seeing a dr specifically for this, on is there not much they can do? I have appts at the hospital with physician and midwife next week already booked in.

This will kill you Mazzymoo - but try to stay off the puter for a while until it settles down. Is it your mousing hand? Mousing can be one of the biggest contributors and you'd probably benefit from seeing a physio who specialises in occupational therapy & ergonomics who will correct your posture and positioning. Because without correcting the reason you're getting strain, you may as well not bother with any other treatment. And don't worry that you won't be able to use your hands - this is not caused because you are using your hands, but because you are using them in a way that causes tension and strain. Once you learn to use a correct posture that doesn't cause strain you will be fine. Is it mostly from computer work, or when you sew as well? Try to identify all the things that you do that cause you experience pain - generally you will find that you tense the muscles in your hand and wrist when you do them. If you can get a mousepad and keyboard wrist support this will help immensely too.
When I first got bad RSI/ borderline carpal tunnel it was so bad I thought I'd broken my hand - I couldn't lift a fork to eat. Generally this is the worst it gets - you've got to a point where it kind of reaches critical mass and the whole area has become inflamed - until the inflammation settles down all you can do is rest.

I had Carpel Tunnel and the only way of getting rid of it was surgery. Since having surgery i have had no problems with my wrist at all. I had tried everything before going under the knife and NOTHING worked. Massage only made it worse, Physio just aggravated it etc. If Massage works for you then your very lucky. All the best.
