Worried about possible curet?

I went to my OB today as I had a pretty big bleed last week and passed a really large clot. She gave me an ultrasound one normal and one internal and told me there may be some placenta left inside my uterus :( she said it is likley to be a clot...although i dont remember much after she said that maybe I will have to have a curet and go under a general anestehic(sp?)

I have never had a general before and I am really scared...also I am worried about how it will affect my BF of DS2?

Has anyone had one of these done after birth? Am I worrying about nothing...will I pass it myself :(

I had one after giving birth but I was only 18 weeks along. From my understanding it doesn't pass on it's own, if it's stuck there it will just continue to bleed around it and cause the clots. But, it may be different after a full term birth, I don't know...

BUT, a curet isn't that scary. The worst part is getting the IV drip put in, basically. Once you come out and you wake up properly you feel completely fine. No pain, nothing. In my case I felt better as my bleeding was getting quite bad and I was also getting bad cramping, a bit like contractions... As for the BF part, no idea... hopefully someone else will come along to fill you in on that part!

Due to my fear of GA, I had a curette done using epidural. I think they approved the epi as I was going to be staying in the hospital overnight anyway.

Oh big hugs darling :comfort: You'll be able to get lots and lots of good info about GAs and BFing here on BB (if you need it). I think i saw a thread about GAs and BFing in the BFing section just the other day.

:hug: Having a curette is much less risky than leaving retained placenta in your uterus which could become infected and cause big problems. I know it sounds scary but it really is pretty straight forward and shouldn't cause any problems with further pregnancies.

You wont be under for long and will be able to breastfeed when you wake up. You will have to fast so that may effect your supply, but i often accidently skip breakfast and it doesn't effect me too much. ;)

Not at all! I have had one and I have a perfectly healthy bubby boy baking away atm ;)

Some people who have had them after m/c have fallen pg quicker as the lining in their uterus is "fresh & new" and the little mites are able to cling onto it better ;)

Hi I have had a few curettes done for missed MCs and one after my first baby, retained placenta !!! if they say you need it done get it done, that will be what will stop you from having another baby if you get a bad infection. Why don't you ask about a twilight anesethic, I don't believe it does'nt take long for the currette to be done and you don't feel anything while they do it under a twilight (but are in a lighter sleep, than a GA) you wake up straight away and feel like you have had the best sleep ever, there are no side effects and you can go home soon afterwards, I believe they used to use them for abortions, whether they still do I have no idea? but I think worth asking about.

I have had this done and have had GA a few times now! U will have the best sleep ever! Dont be scared all will be fine!

I have had GA 15 times. It is really nothing to be scared of. You are not aware of anything and won't remember anything about it either. It is not like being asleep in that you don't dream. I love the feeling when you are going under. You will be just fine! Big hugs.

You'll be fine. I had this happen to me in June. I just had a heap of blood and tissue left in there that they wanted out. My little girl was only 2 weeks old at the time. I had her with me right up until I went into theater and I was able to have her again while I was in recovery and was feeling ok. It didn't take them any longer than 45 mins to do mine. So feeding shouldn't be affected too much, just make sure you tell the nurses you are breastfeeding and they're usually pretty good. Mine all remembered without me having to tell them and made sure as soon as I was ok that my little girl could come in and feed.
