is it possible to have PCOS and not know it and get preg with no issues?

I suppose it's possible if you just happened to DTD at the time you were ovulating.

it's unlikely you'd have pcos and not have some sign. you may have polycystic ovaries but not the related "syndrome" as such - with all the noticable side effects, hormone issues and things.

i managed to fall pg twice by "accident" with pcos - i knew something was wrong (no cycle as such) but cos we were in the honeymoon phase and were unofficially TTC, we just went with it. unfortunately the hormonal issues with the pcos meant i lost both of them

Hoping for some advice about what medication etc you took that enabled you to have Emerald.

I have PCOS and have done 5 cycles of Clomid and not ovulated once (eggs grow but now ovulation). But finally I think my cycle is starting to regulate so perhaps I will ovulate soon.

You did 3 cycles of Clomid and then you list some other things for which I don't know the abbreviation. Would you mind telling me what you did? My doc has now just said see IVF people but I feel there should be more steps between Clomid and IVF. Perhaps I am a dire case ;)

So sad to hear of your first two losses after falling pregnant. Is this a bigger risk with PCOS?

we had the investiagation and found out that i am a severe case of PCOS. i failed to ovulate on even 150mg of clomid, so was referred to a fertility specialist and underwent extensive testing (the request form was full!). i was taking metformin daily to regulate insulin levels due to severe insulin resistance. i went through 5 attempts at IUI - intrauterine insemination - basically it was low level IVF drugs to encourage ovulation - but instead of going through the invasive egg pick up process, ovulation was triggered with strong drugs, and i was inseminated with hubby's swimmers. with that, i had 2 more pregnancies, both lost very early.

with those results, we went to full IVF - due to the PCOS, i got large egg numbers (22) but only half were mature enough to attempt to fertilise, and only five actually fertilised. i had one transferred first time, then two lots of two. the third transfer resulted in another early loss, our fifth.

due to being regional, i was unable to get into another IVF cycle until later in the year, so we decided to have another go or two at IUI before going to full IVF - we simply didn't want to be doing nothing after coming so far. on our second attempt at IUI that time around, we fell pregnant with Emerald.

IUI isn't as invasive as IVF, but uses a lot of the same drugs. each cycle we found out something more about how my body reacted. i needed large doses of the drugs to get a minimal response, would end up with very large follicle counts, but mostly small cysts that would burst when ovulation was forced, so i ended up with mild hyperstimulation most cycles. it wasnt fun, but we got there in the end. we found the balance.

i cant see me going through it all again - if i do, it wont be for a long time!

you need to find you a specialist that won't push forward for IVF straight away if you can. so long as your only problem is the failure to ovulate (so they will need to check your tubes, hubby's sperm count etc) it can work. most specialist will limit you to three attempts before suggesting you move to IVF.

J - are you questioning PCOS due to having not conceieved for the past couple of months? or do you have something else happening that makes you think you may have it?

nah just something that happened at my first ultrasound with DS the sonographer said something about my ovary not 100% sure wat was said but it was never mentioned again so i dont know it obviously wasnt important they also thought my placenta was too close to the cervix but it wasnt later and i get really bad ovulation pain but ive also heard that that could be coz of having a baby aswell so yeah i was just curious if it was possible to have it and then have no issues conceiving i'll be waiting a little while till i investigate if i dont conceive coz the cause of it this time is not enough DTD around O time lol or me visiting my mum at the wrong time lol

I could be similar to you. For the last two cycles I have taken 150mg of Clomid and had scans that show the eggs (3 of them last cycle, I was so hopeful) grow (and grow) but never release (apparently the eggs were 35mm to 40mm)!

I was only diagnosed with PCOS after I went off the pill in Dec08 and failed to get my period until the spcecialist put me on Provera to stimulate it. (I now get it naturally and last cycle only 30 days so am hopeful.)

I think you have helped me decide no more Clomid and I am going to try natural therapies for 4 months whilst I get a referal and in to another specialist. Let the tests begin again!

the mention of your ovary was perhaps reference to the corpus luteum cyst J - the one that forms after teh egg is released - the hormones from it will support the pregnancy hormones until the placenta takes over at 10-12 weeks. they will often mention if it's still visible at a scan...
