What to study?

Just little thoughts going through my head, they do come up from time to time.

Ever since leaving school I have no idea what to do with myself. I am in a job at the moment which I don't hate, but I don't even come close to loving and would love to look at other options.

Over the years I have done so many different things, but I just never seem to find my calling or anything I am particularly enthusiastic about working in.

So thinking I should go back to study, which I have fancied for quite some time, but I have just had no idea what I would like to study. The things that I have found that I really am enthusiastic about and very interested in learning is what we talk about here on BB. Both the birthing options and lackof depending where you are coming from, and also parenting and child development, probably more the parenting and child development side of things.

So, does anyone know of any sort of study I can do in this sort of direction? And before anyone suggests nursing or midwifery - definitely not my scene at all. Nor am I looking for teaching or childcare. If it is part of the study, I'm ok with that, but that isn't my aim to come out as a teacher or nurse.

The problem with things like parenting and child development is that you would need the relevant quals, that although wouldn't necessarily be nursing, would be quite close to it.

If it came to things like birthing options etc, you would also need the relevant quals to be able to answer questions and point people in the right direction. This would probably be close to nursing midwifery as well.

Another thing - if people use the internet to find these options, where would that leave you career wise? How could you translate this into work?

Those that run birthing classes (for eg) are usually midwives, and those that work in a community information field have usually come from the same background.

You might have to refine your ideas a little more so the path becomes clearer :p

That's just my point Lulu!! I have no idea what to study!!! And the only things that are truly interesting me at the moment is all this stuff.... so I guess what I am saying is perhaps I need :help: refining my ideas because I just can't seem to do it by myself!! I know, not much help is it!! :lol:

The idea of studying after you have been away from it is daunting, but if it's the path to you true passion maybe you won't be as lousy as you think?

Maybe you could have a go at Doula-ing :lol:. Or maybe train as an ABA councellor? I think you can start as a volunteer - someone around here was doing that.

If you have passion, you won't be lousy. If you are truly interested in helping people, you won't be lousy.

But have you also considered something like Health Promotion? It is a 3 year degree through Deakin Uni.

What about Psychology, Social Work or Youth Work?

What about studying to be a maternal and child health nurse?
Great regular hours once your in the job, you get to see bubs and toddlers...

Not sure on courses etc and whats required but it might be a nice and rewarding job!

I think a MCHN is a Div 1, midwife who has done another course

but dont quote me on that

What about pathology?

Oooh thanks everyone! There are some interesting ideas there that I had neither considered or even knew existed..... I started to have a "quick" look, but an hour and a half later I am still surfing around and finding one path leads to another which leads to another etc..... so I will keep surfing about and see if I can find some place to start!!
