MCN on a baby with sever ezcema??? Any suggestions...

I would like to give MCN a go on DS who is 4 months old...but he has severe ezcema on most of his body which we keep under control (most of the time) with creams and dermeez moisturiser.

One bit of advice we have been given is only to use natural fibers next to his skin so I'm not sure how some of the linings would be? I am also wondering if MCN might leave him to damp next to his skin and that this could leave him more prone to infection...

At the moment the huggies/babyloves he is in does not seem to cause a flair up so DH (and me to be honest) is a bit hesitant to try MCN in case it makes things worse.

So, has anyone got any advice on mixing ezcema and MCN, and any suggestions on what nappies might have performed well (and which have not)?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

My cousins bub has really BAD ezcema, like steriod cream every second day BAD. She uses POP IN nappies. One type has bamboo (a natural fabric) and the other has some sort of synthetic and her bubs is fine.

I would have expected natural fibres like bamboo to be ok, but my sister couldn't use MCN at all on her DD who had bad ezcema. I hope you have a better result. I would try sticking to natural fibres, changing frequently, and make sure you don't use detergent when you wash them.

stick to velour inners on nappies hon. We suffer with it here to...his skin is always yuck (on his body) but his nappy region is perfect :lol:
I only use bamboo fleece COVERED in bamboo velour. I also stick away from nappies that have hidden PUL or PUL covers as it wont let the area breath and cause to much moisture and irritation.
changing your bub's bottom every 2 -3 hours (like most MCN users do anyway) helps also...and alittle free balling ;) between changes too

Maz - I'm using the three that you made for me as a gift from another BB'er and so far no probs although it took me a change or two to work out the increased change frequency! I did not realise that it was bamboo velour as well - makes sense why we have no probs with them. So officially your MCN are the first on my DS's bum :D...he does like free balling esp the bit where he gets to pee 20 seconds after the nappy is removed! Silly question for you though - if you dont use PUL how do you keep the moisture in the nappy and not on the bed etc???

The ones that you have from me do have PUL in them but the bamboo velour would be helping to keep him dry.

Lots of people just use bamboo and then a PUL cover without having that stay dry layer next to the skin...thats when the area gets wet and as there is no stay dry area the moisure will stay next to bubs skin IFYKWIM.

FLeece, minkee and wool covers allow the area to breath. Moisture evaporates into the air and doesnt 'wet' clothing ect unless its a compression leak (were bub stays int he same position for hours). I know so many people, me included that use either of the 3 everynigiht with much success and we personally in this house DONT have any covers with PUL in them and just use fitteds.

I can't use PUL on DS here. After about an hour his whole nappy area is bright red. Bamboo velour doesn't like him either :rolleyes: He doesn't have eczema though. I use fleece covers, or all fleece nappies.
I gave them a go with DD2, but I was using cheaper ones & they didn't have the stay dry inner (didn't know much about them myself then) & they caused the eczema to get infected. She's out of nappies now thankfully.
Micro fleece inner is ok on DS, who is very sensitive, but as I said, not eczema.

More questions...

Maz - when you talk about having a layer next to the skin that drawn the moister away, do you mean the actual type of fabric eg velour, or that there is a booster or liner there as well as the nappy fabric and shell?? Does that make sense? I guess that I'm trying to work out if I need to be adding something 'extra' to the nappies that I use in addition to the inserts that they come with...

bjrose - when you say that 'fleece' is ok - what sort of fleece is it, is it a wool, cotton or hemp etc?

You don't have any other mcn's there? Microfleece is the inner lining of most mcn's. Some are pretty thin, others are a bit thicker. Its another fabric that wicks the moisture away, but not natural. I use the thicker types on DS where I can, or use a liner made out of the thicker ones.

I have no experience with eczema & microfleece, so I'd be trying the velour as Maz said. You could try a microfleece liner & see how they go before purchasing any nappies that have it inside them. That way you'd know before you spent the money iykwim.
