Who gives their children chores? What age?

DD is 4.5yrs old & enjoys helping me with chores. I have heard of people having their kids actually "doing" chores at this age & I think DD is ready. I already put money in her money box but I think it would be good for her to "earn" extra dollars for helping around the house.

She tidies up toys etc but not all the time. I was thinking of making a chart with different chores & putting a star or something similar when she does one & adding them up at the end of the week??

I was thinking she could do (supervised) chores such as putting the washing in the machine, putting powder in & turning on, helping empty dishwasher, helping cook dinner. These are all things she already asks to help me with & usually does. WDYT?

yep. DS has chores.

unpack dishwasher in the morning.
feed the cat morning and night
get out clean school uniform each night for next day
pack away his clean washing.

he has been doing most of these since he was 8 he is now 9 and a half he gets $10 a month if he does all his chores every day.

we have a list so noone forgets and i dont sound like a broken record.

my 2 yo DD also helps unpack adn pack teh dishwasher. DS isnt to keen on her helping unpack as it annoys him as she does the easy stuff only lol

My children (4 and 5) have chores although not for cash. They have to put their pj's away when they are dressed in the morning, tidy up their toys, and each takes turns helping me to cook dinner (the other ones watches my 22 month old twins in the living room). They do get stars on a chart for helping, but I have never considered giving them cash. I wonder if I should?

My kids all have jobs to do. I started them off when they were about 4 or 5.

They all dust, vacuum their bedrooms, empty the dishwasher, take the rubbish out, feed the animals and make sure their bathroom is tidy. The older 2 (12&10) get $5 a week and hte youngest (7) gets $2. DS mows the lawn now too.

My DD is 3.5 and she has her 'jobs' - no money expchanges hands though. She tidies her toys at the end of the day, makes her bed in the morning when she gets up and puts her pyjamas away after she dresses.

I don't have any children, but from what I can remember being a child, we didn't have chores simply because we tidied up when we were finished with something (dishes, toys, clothes) and fed the pets when we saw there was no food etc etc. We did occassionally have a "big clean" when we all took a day out to clean the house in every nook and cranny. :)

My DS has been doing chores since about 18m. His chores started off with unloading the washing machine into the basket (he loved doing that!) and putting his toys back in the box.

He's nearly three now, and he can pack up his toys (with prompting!), put his dirty plate/bowl by the sink, take off his pyjamas in the morning and put them on his bed, put his shoes and coat away when he has taken them off. He also likes to help sweep up, pass me washing to put on the line, help with the dishwasher and he helped me put up and decorate the Christmas tree on Saturday. DS also bakes with me (he's getting pretty good at helping with the sauces) and likes to do the weeding/watering in the summer.

Funny that i stumbled across this thread... We have just made up a chart for DD for her to do her chores... Which are
Tidy bedroom
Make her bed
Tidy toys in lounge room
and listen to mum and dad (lol this one is working sometimes haha)

We will add more to the list..... and she knows she'll get money at the end of each week we just havent figured out how much.... i would say abt $5 tho to buy whatever she wants with it

The first chore I ever remember being given to do was to wash the dishes. I also had to help feed the cat, dog and birds. I know I would have been around 4 or 5.

My kids all do chores, they start from as soon as they can undrrstand, eg: 15month old helps pack the toys up..
They are pretty basic, pull the doona up pack your toys away, mainly to do with keeping their rooms clean, but they do put the washing in their rooms, I pack it away !!! we also expect them to help outside, if we are cleaning up they get a broom etc, we don't pay for these jobs, might be a bit harsh but i think its a part of being a family and the mummy and daddy are not the only people there who make a mess.
No flatmate/boyfriend girlfriend is going to pay them to help clean up, its just a part of life.:doh:unfortunatley!!!

dd is nearly 3 and she does things when asked like sets the table, picks up toys and puts them away, will put her dishes up at the sink (and mine!!) and little odds and sodds that i ask her to do, but nothing is set, its just when she's asked...

us kids never had to do ANYTHING in our house growing up, my mum did it all, so i am hell bent on making sure my kids help out, so when she is a bit older she will definitely have set jobs to do.

Charlotte helps with things now, like putting away her washing and taking dirty washing to the basket, putting away some dishes with me and "packing away" her toys (daycare phrase she has picked up and loves lol)

I certainly will not be giving Charlotte money based on her doing her chores though.
Chores need to be done so we don't live in a pigsty, so that things stay clean and tidy and so that our home and ourselves are respectable. I have no intention of creating the notion that she will be paid money every time she completes a task. Things get done because that is how we live in a civilised fashion, not because we get money for them.
That's just my opinion though :)

DD is 17 months old and loves to help me do things....how ever good she is at actually helping she likes to try. This morning she 'helped' me sweep the kitchen floor, she has a little broom. and all the tea-towels were all over the kitchen (she did that) and i asked her to put them all away while i went to the toilet, i came back and she had actually done it, and was standing there with the cutest 'look what i did mummy' look across her face!! SO cute...i say start em young ;)

I tried when my kids where a bit younger, earlier last year but it never lasted a week even with giving them pocket money. Kameron is now 8 and he is starting to do the odd jobs about the house if I ask him to. So I am going to start giving him a small amount of money for helping me.

I've just started being consistent with getting DD who is 4 to do chores. I started because she was just leaving me to do things for her and wouldn't help when asked.

So I've made a chart for one week to test the concept. Her job is pack up after she completes a games or play. She gets a star for each time she helps clean up an activity and after collecting 12 stars she gets to go out for pink milk with me.

Other jobs I have also started are helping to set the table, putting her pj's under her pillow etc and unpacking the dishwasher.

Funnily my 2 yo has also started to help:) and she wants stars too lol

see i would sort of expect them to pack up after they play as just part of playing, and not as actually one of their jobs, as otherwise you would be picking up after them all the time if they just walk away from games they have started etc.... i suppose i see jobs/chores as additional things that need to be done in the house, not just relating to a mess that they have made, but maybe i am a hardar$e!!!
either way i think reward charts are a great idea, haven't used them yet, but will do when she is a bit older for bits and pieces....
