is this reflux or something else?

Hi everyone would love your opinions please

Our dd will be 5 weeks old on monday. I am wondering if she has acid reflux or something similar?

Once she has had her milk (breastfed), she only likes to be put in the sitting position. We burp her, she does a good burp, but if we try and lie her down, she screams, as though its very uncomfortable. This can go on for hours. She will also bring up some vomit, small amounts, and sometimes cries when she does (like a 'shriek' cry, as in pain, not an ongoing cry). she will sometimes bring up a little vomit when she burps too. But its as though it hurts her when the vomit comes up. (she occasionally does a lot of vomit, on average once every 24-34 hours, like a projectile vomit. but this seems to cause her no concern, she doesnt get upset).

We are concern for her as not only does she seem to be very uncomfortable, but she gets very tired and just wants to sleep but as soon as we lay her back she gets upset.

any ideas?


oh just to add, she hiccups alot and also sounds 'fluidy' sometimes when we lay her down, as though she needs to have a good cough. So we try and rub her back to help

Sounds like it could be. I would go get it checked out by your doctor and get a referral for a Paed. In the meantime you can raise one end of the cot so that when she is lying down she isnt flat on her back.

That's just how DS2 was with his reflux. I always asked dr's & clinic nurses, and they said that he was just a sicky baby, and because of that, he went undiagnosed for 5 months! When born, his weight was 90th percentile, and at 5 months was only 10th percentile. Thankfully I found a GP who picked it up the first time we saw him, put him on Zoton and within 6 months was at 80th percentile for his weight.

Definately see a dr, and don't settle for an answer you're not happy with.

You could also try some infant gaviscon until you get in to see the Dr, it may be all she needs.

Brendans reflux we managed without meds or anything and it cleared up around 12-13 months old.

Tristan occassionally needs some infant gavison to help his, but mostly he just spews ALOT lol.

We were told by our nurse to try a 2.5ml dose of Mylanta when our boy was 6 weeks old. If it relieves any symptoms then it usually indicates that it could be reflux and you need to make an appointment with your doctor who will prescribe something safer and longer-acting. As it happens, our boy didn't have reflux, but I just remember what the nurse said. I hope things improve for you.

My DD was very much like that at that age. She wasn't comfortable lying on her back and would scream and vomited if I put her on her back after bf, even when I thought I've had propped her up long enough to burp. She vomited as well when burping. Our GP didn't want to give her anything, saying it's normal as long as she puts on weight and it will go away as she grows.

I found that lying bub on her side or tummy for a while after a good burp helped to calm her down, and most of the time she just fell asleep, then I could flip her back. And the reflux did went away eventually at around 3 months.

after a terrible weekend of dd being in pain we changed our appointment with the doctor to an earlier one, and went today. She does have reflux and has been put on zoton. I hate to see her on medication but its unbearable to see her in so much pain.

Glad you got her onto medication hon. Don't feel bad about it either, she was in pain!

Our DD has silent reflux and was originally put on Zoton but it didn't do much at all. We took her to her Paediatrician, instead of going back to the GP, and he put her straight on Losec. We had a different baby within 48 hours. Keep it in mind if you find the Zoton doesn't work.

I hope the meds really help. Reflux is terrible for all involved, especially the bubbies.
