i was just given some advice from a friend who used a known donor at home when she had her baby. she says she was told by a doc to get donor to ejaculate four days before ov then insem two days before ov on ov day and two days after. we have had several unsuccessful insems and will probably have two more attempts before we give up im 32 and partner 38 our donor is 28 and i dont think i could handle the ivf journey after the time we have already spent ttc has been very emotionally draining.

I hope you and your partner have been successful with TTC. My partner and I have just started the IUI process and understand your want not to do IVF (it scares me too). My partner Lou is 37 so we're hoping that we don't have too much trouble conceiving. I'm sending wonderful thoughts and vibes out to the universe so hopefully they will answer with a relatively easy TTC experience for us.
It's so nice to read everyone's posts hear. It makes me feel a lot less scared and alone.

Do I have this right? He ejaculates 4 days before and you use that ejaculate for your insemination?
I have no idea how long sperm can survive outside the body but when DH had his Vasectomy (this is going to be TMI) he was told to ejaculate into the jar and race it to the lab because the sperm can die within hours. So if you're using the ejaculate from 4 days before, chances are they're probably dead BUT millions are produced and you only need 1 sperm to get pregnant. So really I have no idea. Sorry if I've confused the situation.
I'm not sure exactly what you mean either.
I know people suggest getting the donor, or partner in the case of straight couples, to ejaculate a few days before and then not again until the day of insemination just to let the sperm build up (not exactly sure of the reason, but I think its because of quality or quantity), and then inseminate a few times before, during and after ovulation as sperm can live for up to five days once inseminated. But I think they say not TOO much because if the donor is ejaculating a lot then quality (or quantity, like I said I'm not really sure of the reason) goes down.
If you mean keeping the ejaculate for more than a few hours outside of the body then that's just not possible unless you freeze it. But if you mean getting the donor to ejaculate four days before ovulation, and then again two days before and inseminate, on the day of ovulation and then insemiante, and two days after and then inseminate then I think thats a really good plan.

Leasha - I'm pretty sure that quantity goes down, because they aren't getting the chance to replenish supplies. Quality should stay the same. If they've always been good quality, then increased ejaculations won't damage the quality of the sperm. At least I've never heard of that happening anyway.....
