Positive comments about bfing my almost-4 year old

I went out to a preschool mums dinner last night and at some point the conversation came around to bfing. All four mothers I was talking to had bf their children to at least 12 mths. I said I was still bfing DD once a day.

They were surprised, but one mum (who's a doctor) was so impressed and kept saying how wonderful she thought that was. Another mum said she felt so bad about weaning her son at 17 mths. (She's pg again and she speculated that she'd go for longer this time). Another mum (also a doctor) joined in to express her approval. The overall consensus was we all do what we feel is right but they were all so positive about me still bfing DD that I came away with a warm glow!

I really didn't expect it. I'm not 'out there' about bfing, but I kinda thought it would be more of a neutral response. I am really hoping there's a subtle shift in our perceptions to bfing, so that other mothers don't think it's 'weird' to be bfing a child.

(Although I do admit that perhaps these mums are not the best representation of the whole of society!).

So don't be afraid to let people know you're bfing a toddler/child - I really do think it's normalising it more so than we realise.

That's fantastic, especially about the Dr. i hope she has that attitude with her clients that are mums too.

Thanks, Jen. that is a really great story. When I hear stories like that - I am hopeful that oneday we might really be a a culture where breastfeeding is the societal norm as well as the biological norm

Yay, that' is so great. :clap: How refershing to hear something positive about breastfeeding (outside an ABA meeting that is). It gets exhausting having to explain to everyone that, no it is not weird that I am breastfeeding a toddler... And so good that the doctors had such a great attitude, as so many around don't.

You're right, Starfish, it's outside of the ABA meeting that makes it so nice! They already know there's nothing unusual about bfing a four year old. ;)

Jennifer our DD's were born only a month apart. As you know i had to wean DD early for various reasons... :(

Every time i've been away from BB for a while and i'm back on i go looking for your sig and every time i see you and your DD still enjoying that special bond (ha! milkbond! lol, sorry) i have a little "yay" in my heart. :)

I don't know if i'll make it to 4 wit tis next one, depends somewhat on the kid i guess, but i WILL be doing everything i can to get to 24 months. When i was PG with DD i thought 12 months would be a great time to wean, and now i know what the society i live in thinks is normal can be thoroughly questioned!
