Toliet Training and going out??

I am just starting to toliet train my DD who is nearly 2 1/2. At home I have just been putting undies on her and reminding her about the potty. The nappy goes back on at the moment when we go out and for sleeps. We have a few accidents a day, but mostly she does really well. How did others progress to not wearing nappies when they leave the house? And what did you do? Do you have to take a potty with you?

I never ever took a potty or toilet seat with me, yet I have known others who have taken them - I think it just comes down to personal choice. :) My theory is that if I have to take a potty with me then they will never learn to use a toilet - I saw it happen to my neice, she became too dependent on one of those toilet seat inserts and wouldnt go to the toilet unless she had one. :rolleyes:

I just always took a couple of spare changes of undies and pants and continuosly put them on the toilet - ie immediately before we went anywhere I would make them go and then ask them constantly when out and sometimes just automatically take them without asking them. Seemed to work for us. :)

with my boys i jsut decided that they were ready and they never wore nappies after that lol it helped that they were so easily adaptable ( they could pee on a tree if need be lol) My DD has just turned 2 and we approched it a little different, she decided she was ready and we stayed home as much as possible and let her wear nickers to places that didnt matter. we did that for the first week and then we just decided that if she wet it doesnt matter anyway so we have plenty of nickers in her bag but she hasnt had very many accidents at all!

When DD was starting out, she'd wear nappy pants with undies over the top when we went out. Then when she went about a week with no accidents she'd wear undies everywhere unless it was a long trip in the car - then she had a nappy pants in the car only. I still try and take spare clothes everywhere JIC. I carry her toilet insert if going to the park because I hate the thought of what's on those seats ;) Anywhere else she uses whatever is available (most shopping centres have little toilets these days).

I use to be really anxious about her having an accident in public, but these days I go with the flow. She is good at asking to go to the loo and I ask frequently. She had an accident the other day in a Cafe (we were sitting outside and on plastic chairs) and the guy was really good about it. Took it to the big grass area they have for kids to run on, emptied it, and cleaned it. I was :redface: and so was DD (she hardly ever has accidents) but no one cared. Kids are kids and everyone needs to learn to go to the toilet!

Around here public toilet are few and far between so I tend to pop a pull-up on DD but still take her to the toilet regularly and ask her frequently. I also have a disposable huggies change mat folded up under her in her carseat just in case. I do have a fold up toilet seat to use on public toilets becasue like MG it scares me to think what is on those seats and if we are going to a park where I know there are no toilets I will chuck a potty in the car and also heaps of changes of clothes. thanks everyone. I guess I will just give her another week or so to get used to not going in her nappy and then take lots of spare clothes when we go out :-)

Liviam, great idea about the huggies change mats for the car - will definatly be doing that.
