When I get ready and brush my teeth I always give DS his toothbrush as well and he enjoys that. I've always given him his toothbrush in the bath so he's very familiar with it.
After his bed-time bottle we go into the bathroom and I get his toothbrush and say "aaaaah" and he opens up and we can brush his front teeth (hopefully we will get to molars soon).
I used to give my DD the toothbrush to use herself and then I noticed food build up on her eye teeth. Now she sits on my lap and I brush them for her. It's only a quick brush though because she just wants to hold it and play with it. I've started using a little toddler toothpaste over the last few weeks too.
I have always let jack play with his but he must let me clean them morning and night we started right from word go
