sudden change in 17 month old sleep behaviours ???

hi all

Over the last few weeks my little boy, who was normally quite easy to put down to bed, is starting to become quite hard.

Every time i lie him down in his cot he screams and stands up and wants to be picked up. I have had to rock him to sleep in my arms to get him to sleep, i have resorted to this as he (and I) were so tired i didnt know what else to do.

He used to pretty much go to sleep on his own, (he has a dummy). I dont know why this may have changed??

Does anyone have any advice or ideas on why this sudden change is happening?

Any advice will be helpful, starting to feel the strain.

Subscribing to this thread because I'm having similar issues with DS who is 15 and a half months. He used to be easy to get to sleep and we were almost in a routine but recently he's really fought against going to sleep and then keeps waking up during the night. I am so tired. However, I co-sleep and he expects to be fed to sleep. He's also getting more teeth, so I've put down some of the struggle to that. Wish I knew the answer, Bugalug! :hug:

We had the same problem with dd1 at 15 months but it coincided with our new baby so I put it down to that. We eventually worked out that she didn't want to sleep in her bed anymore and wanted to sleep on the floor at her gate so we set up a blanket etc there and she'd go down no problem after a bit. Is he getting his first molars? They disrupted us here. When dd1 transitioned to one sleep she got a bit funny with sleep too. All I can suggest is it's a phase. Just be consistent with how you deal with it. If he used to go down without a fuss he will eventually go backto that. It will just take a while. Are his day sleeps ok? Some people say their kids sleep better once they're in a big bed too.... Just suggesting things ive heard ;)

his day sleeps are quite similar, a hit or miss really..

he is getting his molars i think, so hopefully thats all it is.

Last night he went down quite late, i tried numerous times to put him down and he would scream hysterically, when i finally went in he was so sweaty and worked up. I eventually got him to quieten down by sitting next him and patting him on his tummy while he had a bottle (naughty i know, but it works for us).

It is tiring isn't cheekyfrog...especially when you're used to such a good little sleeper. Anyway hopefully it just passes, I just dont want the rocking/patting that i am using now to help him go off to sleep (rather than the crying) to become a habit. ??

I am having a very similar problem with my 16 month old son. He was a perfect little sleeper - he would go down and put himself to sleep with a dummy at 7:30pm.

We kept him up Christmas Eve to 9pm, and since that night he has been refusing to go to sleep! We have been resettling him til 9, 9:30pm (hubby is in with him now). He has also been doing some other unusual things, like refusing to have a bath (he stands up and clings and won't sit down). Hubby has to stay with him now to keep him calm or else he just cries and stands up in his cot. It seems like when he is in bed he isn't even tired, but today when it was around his regular bedtime he was definitely grumpy etc.

Can some expert or more experienced mother provide the answer to this very irritating and tiring phenomenon of not wanting to go to sleep at this age (and we have a very calming and ritual bedtime routine that lasts for 1/2 hour that we've been doing for ages!)?

My little man is also doing that silly bath thing too!!!!!! Where in the past we would sit and play and love the bath, now like you said just stands up on the edge, still plays and is happy but gets upset when i try to sit him down. Ethan is nearly walking on his own so i'm not sure if this is a "I want to walk thing" or something else.

Well to my suprise he went to sleep quite well tonight, i had to lie him down and sit next to him and pat his tummy while he had his bottle.

Who knows? ! Strange little critters!!
