Hoping to move out and start renting

Ok so i have been saving and collecting bits ands peices this year so i will be prepared and ready to move out(in a few months time) still got a lot to do and alot to buy. but im starting to get excited about the thought of creating a home for me and grace and making it ours. dont get me wrong im not nieve in that its going to be tough! but i thought id ask for peoples tips and stories of when they first moved out etc :)

so far i have: (which is not alot)

-bed
-cot
-chest of drawers
-bookshelf
-cutlery
-plates/bowls/mugs/glasses
- i could possibly have an old fridge, that my dad has in his garage..(but im hoping to buy my own)

What else do i really really need??

Also am i realistic that i can afford to move out if i have about 3.5k saved??

im not sure yet if i will be moving out with a friend and her bub yet it will prob be cheaper this way but im worried as iv heard some bad stories about friendships being ruined etc.. again any stories etc would be a great help xx

Do you have a washing machine???? Blankets/sheets etc. These type of things you can usually pick up at Salvos etc if you can't afford new ones. What about cooking utenstils eg. saucepans etc. Again, salvos or similar would have these.

Not sure where you are located??? Is 3.5K enough in your area? You will usually need 1 months rent as bond + 2 weeks in advance. You will then need to factor in connection fees for electricity etc.

In terms of friendships, i think as long as you have clear boundaries set out and everyone is clear on what these area eg. who does cleaning, paying bills, etc etc it should be ok, but bear in mind things can get difficult if one person doesn't pull their weight around the house.

umm they are just the things i use daily!
I have lived with friends and altho it does make it cheaper, it is very hard. You have to know that you trust the person and you have clear house rules i guess!

Firstly i want to say great work on the saving!! I had to get a loan for when me and Dp moved into our place, only because it was a last minute decision to move out on our own, we were living in a group house and we got sick of them so decided it was that or continue living with selfish slobs.

I'm not sure how expensive it is where you live but i took out a 10 grand loan and it wasnt enough, after paying for the bond, buying the white goods (fridge, washer & dryer), kitchen goods and an entertainment unit, oh also paid for a months shopping.

Thankfully getting your gas & electricity connected the payment is added onto your first bill, same with the line fee, though my house is a brand new house we had to pay $300 where as in a house with a phone line already installed its only about $30 (dont quote me on that).

Salvos are really good at getting sheets and kitchen goods though i just went to kmart and grabbed everything we needed for under $100 yes some of the items are cheap and some have broken its a start. And being a young mum salvos will be really helpful they helped my mum out heaps when she left my step dad they got her a cheap lounge, dining table even decked out her whole kitchen so talking to them wouldnt hurt.

Have you looked into a bond loan with the dept. of housing, you would almost definitely be eligible

Yea a lounge, dining table, tv, washer, fridge, washing basket and pegs, kitchen stuff, towels, teatowels

So yea 3.5k could be enough depending on what the rents are like?? Say if you got a bond loan and your rent was $300 a week you would need $600 foor you first 2weeks and then you would have 2.9k for fridge bits and pieces etc

Also you would probably be able to get some extra centrelink money for rent assistance so maybe look into that?

everyone has given you great ideas... the first thing i thought of was groceries... toilet paper, washing powder, dishwashing liquid, sponges... basic stuff that you might not realise you need till you go to use it!

Great ideas - as for sharing perhaps a discussion about what happens when either of you gets a partner, how bills/chores/rent would be split now and if this happens also perhaps what happens if one person wants to move on etc. Sounds very negative but may make things easier in the long run. I thin most people have given you GREAT ideas on things to buy, just remember at the start it doesn't need to be new, when i first moved out i was 18 and NOTHING matched in my house, i bought things from the op shop (furniture etc) and had family give me things they didn't need anymore.

Another great thing is tell family & friends your planning on moving, for your b'day etc they can pool together and get something you NEED or even give you cash.

Stay true to yourself hun and i know you can do it, you and Grace will have an amazing time in your own place with your own space.. start small and work your way up.
You have the determination and i know you will make it work.

Re sharing, i had the WORST experience with someone i thought i could trust, i worked days and she worked nights and i THOUGHT she was paying the rent during the day, problem was she wasn't and she was hiding the letters about it.
I was lucky as a friend of mine owned the house i was renting, i kicked out the other friend and my friend wrote off the debt and we started fresh.
Just make sure you have set boundaries and that you think you CAN live with this person 24/7.

good luck hun, it's a big but exciting step to take. I was lucky when I first moved out of home I went to dorms at uni so everything was provided, and when i moved out of there I moved in with DF who already had his own stuff! I got away with it cheaply..lol.

Kitchen stuff is probably the most important, and bedding. As long as you have something to eat & cook on/with, sleep on and sit on you should be right for a short time! Make lots of lists :)

Oh thanks you guy, you've given me alot to think about which is good some of those things i didnt even think about! Ill definently look into the bond loan thing, that will be such a help! the rent around this area is astronomical atm ill be lucky to get something at about 300-350! i really would love it just to be me and grace as ive been living in a full on house for some time (which is good as your never lonely lol) but i think it will be nice to have it be just us:) if i can afford it;)

im going to start going to the tender centre around here and seeing if i can pick up some furniture cheap etc.. the things im hoping to buy new are a fridge and washing machine and probably the kitchen stuff might see if i can pick up some bargains on thursday at the christmas sales etc..

Don't forget about garage sales either.

In the past I have gotten couches (2x 2seaters and an armchair, matching coffee table and end table, bookcase, table lamp (all at the one garage sale for about $150) some outdoor toy things for DD (slide, basketball hoop), and lots of books (novels and cookbooks).

And have seen a lot of old dinner sets, coffee cups, pots and pans, kids room curtains, heaps of toys etc. And I reckon they are heaps cheaper, coz people just want them 'gone', so if not sold, then they are going to throw them out, and have to pack a trailer etc.

In Victoria you can get an interest free loan from Clink to buy whitegoods. I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be available anywhere else. They direct debit from your payment. I think you can get up to $1000 and have a year to pay it back.

DO look out for reconditioned fridges. Places that do it are likely to give pretty good warranties. In fact I've only bought my first brand new fridge about 2 years ago because reco ones were far cheaper and just as good.

Don't forget about a vacuum cleaner - you just can't live without one!

And get a decent one! We bought a tiny cheap & nasty vaccy from Sam's Warehouse or somewhere like that...did the job ok for a one bedroom unit, but once we moved into a house it was a nightmare vacuuming. Loved it when we upgraded to a real vacuum cleaner! So if you can spare $300 odd dollars (we got a vax on special for about that price from Harvey Norman) get a good one from the start!

thanks guys i went shopping at the after christmas sales and picked up a kitchen essentials pack with all these sauspans, strainers, fryingpans for really cheap so thats one less thing. ill write a list here which ill add to once ive got new things if people can help think of new stuff? ive tried to think of all the things i use on a daily basis(besides grocery items)

i found a place close to my parents(just down the road really a 2 bedroom unit its ok its right near the shops, for $265, im hoping to have alook at that next week..

I'd also leave aside some money for your first grocery shopping to stock those cupboards :D, which will also probably need to cover cleaning supplies which you won't have to buy each week....
