The ABA has a brand spanking new pamphlet out on this! Effectively, aim for one standard drink right after a feed so that by the next feed your BAC (B for Blood AND Breastmilk!) will have lowered or cleared. TheABA website has the pdf for download :)
So one per hr is wrong? Oh I feel bad:( Would I have really effected Lucy terribly?:(
If the alcohol had cleared in that hour, no problem. If not, just tweak your drinking style next time. The pamphlet isn't to make you feel bad, just to inform you on how to gauge - it will be different for everyone :)
 And keep in mind the potency of your drink - some wine can be 3 standard drinks per glass, so keep an eye on that too.
One standard drink takes 2-3hrs to get out of your system (I often have a calculator and measuring cup when I have a drink) I hardly ever have a drink until Spence is down for the night which means I have 11hrs until his next feed.
A lot of the premixed drinks and the little bottles of riccadonna are 1 standard drink, riccadonna is a good one to have a lot for your standard drink
I urgue you to reAd the Aba brochure as posted by Mayaness.
Somehow the imperitive to stay "pure" and not drink is put on breastfeeding. Women. In fact current Australian guidelines sAy thAt women should have no
more 1-2 standArd drinks - that's all of us, whether we are breastfeeding or formula feeding -18 or 80. It's bad for our heAlth. Many of uschoose not to follow those guidelines.
The real problem is drunk parents are not really good parents regardless of how they feed their baby.
For many woman working with the pressures in our society the alternatives are not "drinking or not drinking" when you gave a young baby, they are having a drink and giving thebaby formula. The consequences of formula feeding to the health of mothers and babies is real and thoroughly researched. No negatve consequences have been found in
babies of mothers who drink even high amounts of alcohol have been found. The amount of alcohol that would be ingested over a few drinks over a night is inconsequential. So don't get into a lather about it. Your MCHN was basically right.
Thanks very much ladies :)
Barb-Can I get to this brochure through the link on your signature?
Also Im expressing so I can drink on Thursday night. Im thinking Ill need to feed Lucy twice in this time. How many mls should I express?
I just looked at the brochure, you can get to it through Barb's signature link.
It's absolutely wonderful and very infomative!
I found the brochure answered all my questions! Well what I have been doing is fine :) I feel better now!
But I do still need to know about how many mls for Lucy need to be expressed. Im hand expressing, man its not easy!
These points are great to have actually 'in words'
• It is better to give a breastfeed with a small amount of
alcohol than to feed artificial baby milk.
• There are risks in feeding your baby artificial baby milk.
Hun, Lucy is probably drinking about 750mls in 24 hours. So to get a rough guide as to how much you will need, divide 750 by the number of feed she has in 24 hours, and that is the approximate amount per feed. Often though babies drink less from a bottle or cup then they do from mum, so she might drink less and make up for it when you are able to feed her again.
Thanks MR:)
So if she feeds every 3hrs. So I divded 24 by 3 and got 8. I then divided 750 by 8 and got around 93 point something.
So if I express 2 bottles with around 90-100lms each, that should be enough? Did I do all that correctly?
yes, that's correct. Are you OK to express that much? Remember, it's not the end of the world if she has a bit of alcohol laced milk. Most breastfeeding mothers don't drink as much as they think they will.
I just finshed my 1st bottle. I did 95mls ;) Ill get another one done by tomorrow!
Barb- She'll be getting a little laced with alcohol as the bottles Im doing are just 'in casers' ;) I would just hate to want to drink more and not be prepered:rolleyes:
of wine? They are mighty small bottles - the wine I buy comes in 750 mls....
Oh, you mean EBM for the baby - my mistake
LOL
Im lucky Im drunk from 3 glasses so wont be to big of a night haha
