How to get rid of a comfort blanket

Hi All,

DD has a comfort blanket since she was about 8 months. It is just any muslin material. Anyway, she cannot go to sleep without it (we have tried many times) but it has gotten worse.

She use to only use it when she wants to go to sleep now she wants to hold it everywhere! Today i went to the shop and she wanted to bring it with her in the car as she was sleepy so i let her then we arrived at the shops and she wouldnt let go of it. I said No and put it and she chucked a tantrum.

so how do i get rid of this and why is she more and more reliant on this comfort blanket instead of becoming less reliant on it?

My sister had one when she was little and in the end the only way Mum could get rid of it was to slowly cut it up. Every few days it would get a little smaller until about a month later it was the size of a hankie and just went into her pocket.

Why do you want her to get rid of it?

She will grow out of it. I had a security blanket from when i was a baby until I was about 8. I remember having arguments with my mother because I wanted to take it out with us but she made a rule that it stayed in the car when we went anywhere. I didn't like the rule at first but got used to it. One day I suddenly realised I didn't want it anymore and haven't had it since. My mum still has the pillowcase and brings it out for my kids to look at lol.

So maybe just make a rule that she only has it at home or in her bed, she'll soon get used to not having it when you're out.

The reason why i want to get rid of it is because she gets it all dirty when she goes out with it and it always falls down.

I dont mind her having it with her when she sleeps but not sure why it has escalated to taking it with her everywhere even to the shops.

I agreee:yeahthat: With my DD1 she is 4 she still has her 'nay' a fluffy blanket and she takes her everywhere, but she is not allowed out of the car etc. It does not harm anyones, and I have no intentions on taking it away.

rather then taking it away set out the rules. it stays in her bed for her sleeps, even if she is sleepy in the car it doesnt go "incase you lose it"

my Ds only became attached to his comforter when he was 2..
DD has had many different comforters and has yet to settle on one

I agree with above, maybe explain to her if she takes it out it could get lost, keep it as a bedtime thing.
My DD has one too and the way she is with it I could see her having it til she's 21! But she sleeps well with it so well worth it.

my DD is 23months and still has her cuddle blankie with a lambs head that rattles that MIL gave me for her when i was UTD with DD.

mostly she has it for naps but when she is teething she tends to take it out and about. We take it with us whenever we go away.

I wont be taking it off her as i figure she will grow out of it eventually in her own time.

I have found with DS's comfort items that they start off just being for naps etc and then it escalates to bringing it in the car and then into the shops. But I agree that you should decide on your rules and stick to them. It is best to introduce them to her when she hasn't already decided that she wants something different. We will explain it when we start talking about going out then if he asks to take his blanky it is easier to remind him then introduce it at that point IYKWIM?

My DD is coming up to 2.5 and still loves her blanky. I do remember at around 18 months she started wanting to take it everywhere. I did what the other suggested and just had rules about where it was allowed to go. She needs it a lot less these days, but still needs it to sleep or if she is sad / tired/ hurt / sick. I am very thankful she has her blanky at these times as it gives her so much comfort.
