Wipes & Liners - Cloth Or Disposable?

Ok,

So still trying to gather information here & its starting to make sense :lol:

I'm almost sure I have the nappies sorted ;) but wondering what you girls prefer with the wipes - the disposables or cloth?

If you use the cloth, I presume you use the foaming cleaner with it - in a nappy change (not wet but poo) how many cloth wipes do you use?
I'm just wondering if I intend to use these whether I would have to get a massive stash (for example the NB breastfed poosplosions ;))?

I think I've figured out to use the flushable liners... although I'm happy & open for suggestions otherwise :)

What do you use as far as wipes & liners & why?

I use cloth wipes - just cheapo thin face washers from Big W/Coles that come in a 12 pack. I have 24 and wash every 2nd day, but don't come anywhere close to running out of wipes. If it's a big poo, then I'll probably use 3 wipes (but these face washers aren't huge). I don't use a foaming cleanser with them. I have a spray bottle that is mostly water with a squirt of babywash and 2 spurts of sorbelene cream - cheap and easy! I then spray onto the cloth wipe, and wipe away. DS hasn't had any nappy rash at all with this regime.

I use cloth wipes with the foaming cleanser, and I find it works really well. Mind you, having said that, my DS only poos once a day (sometimes less), so I don't have to deal with really messy nappy changes very often.
Having said that, for out and about I think disposable wipes are much easier.

As for liners, I don't use them very often so I can't help you much there sorry.

I use both disposable and cloth wipes and usually just use warm water with the cloth though I do have a lovely foaming cleanser that i use to freshen her up with.

as for liners - hate them!! i brought a 500 roll of them and i wouldn't put them in my own knickers against my skin let alone DD nappies. all our water goes into our septic tank so i have no issue rinsing pooy nappies into our laundry tub.

I dont use liners, but a lot do....

Wipes.. I use cloth.
If you get the big ones, (itti's, and Maz ones for example) you use heaps less.... ;)
I use 1 for a normal to largish mess, a BIG mess, 2.
I go from using foam wash to just water... if its sticky or such, use the wash, for an "easy" clean, just water...

For out and about, I use biodegradable bamboo wipes... so not quiet cloth, but not too bad either.... :lol:

I use cloth wipes. Make sure that you get ones that have excellent 'grippage' to get sometimes stuck to bum pooh of hon. Sherpa, piled fleece or terry are great for them (one side or both). Ive fallen in love with velour wipes, their so soft on bums yet can get the grim eoff IFYLWIM.

I used cloth liners when my kids were little, not as much anymoe BUT they do protect your nappies from stains big time. I just use plain micro fleece ones..you can make them yourself. Their approx 28cm x 10cm so you'd get a heap out of a meter. No need to sew or overlock the edges as they dont fray.

AND with liners I find that when their pooh is a bit more solid I can take the liner out and flick the pooh of into the toilet rather then the whole nappy.

I use all of the above whether im at home or out. It makes absolutely no difference to me. Just make sure you have a good wetbag.

ETA - I use foamy soap wash from Bubbly bliss on WAHMnaps and just plain warm water. I think disposable wipes are cold and wouldnt want one of them on my woo haa

i use cloth wipes - haven't used anything else! we use one or two for a dirty nappy - three for a really bad one (but we've only had that happen since she started solids - given she goes up to 10 days between dirty nappies, it can be REALLY dirty!)

mostly we just use warm water - so we wet one or two and will have a couple of dry ones nearby - if i need an extra one, then i might use the foaming wash as it's near the nappy change area.

as for liners - haven't used them in the past, but now that we've started solids i'll give them a go - i have a few disposable/flushable ones here (and they wet ones can go into compost - DH has decided to put the round the lemon tree!)

We found some great liners at baby bunting, they are the bambino mio brand and they are so thin and soft. Much nicer than the other roll we bought which we now use as paper towel. They were horrible. We have only just started to use mcn so the liners are great as ds poo can still be a bit soft but doesn't really explode like newborn poo can. Im not sure how useful the liner would have been with newborn poo but i haven't had any experience with a newborn and mcn.

We used to use liners, until he poo started hardening up and it just rolled off into the toilet. But we used them to about 14-15 months. Disposable ones first, because I didn't realise there were any others! Then we moved to a mixed of cloth (microfleece) liners and flushable liners. I'd put a flushable liner in when I knew she'd poo (she's fairly predictable) and then use cloth other times. They were REALLY handy for newborn poos, and we used disposable for those months but flushable would havde been even better.

I have cloth wipes, a few kinds. I was just going to use face washers but Shel was scared of a mix-up with our actual facewashers hehehee. So I bought some. I have ones that are terry on one side and flannelette on the other. Some that are I think fleecey on one side and flanellette on the other (they have no 'cleaning', just no 'grip', but are good for face, hands, and nose wipes). And some Itti Bitti ones I got as a free present during the GDUNH, they are really nice, velour wipes. Love them!

ETA: We don't use a foam or anything, just some warm water. We soak them in chamomile tea if she has a bad rash.

We use cloth at home but I have a 3yo so we have a stash of disposable wipes for when we're out.

I use cheapo washers and have some fab Maz ones as well as some bamboo fleece ones. Depends on what the mess is to what I use. I only ever have used water. Nate isn't a huge pooer, so I rarely have a disaster, though I know when DH has dealt with a poo cos half the wipes are in the nappy bucket lol. I would have about 15? I guess, but never run out.

I don't often use liners at all, never have :dunno: I do have a grand total of 3 microfleece ones that I use if they're ill, but again I've never thought OMG I need more.

At NB stage we found the disposable wipes were too harsh so we used cloth with just plain water when we were home and only used disposable ones when we were out and about. Then as DS grew older we went to disposable full time. I'm not sure why, it just evolved that way!! But recently I have gone back to cloth again because again we found the disposable ones were just too harsh and drying leading to irritation over time. And DS has great skin and the wipes were supposed to be the most gentle so really I think cloth wipes with either plain water or a wipes solution is so much better for them. If you are using cloth nappies it isn't much of a stretch to take cloth wipes around with you anyway. We have a mix of wipes from the Big W 12 pack that Ruth is talking about, to the super thick velour ones from Itti Bitti to some homemade ones made by a lovely friend so I have varying thicknesses and sizes and can choose the most appropriate for the job.

As for liners during NB stage and right up until DS started solids we didn't bother with liners and had absolutely no issues. The NB B/F poo just soaked straight in anyway. As for the staining, it was only a slight issue when I couldn't dry them in the sun, and that was quite rare and I live in Melbourne. It doesn't have to be hot sun, just sun. And the stains that were left if I couldn't dry them in the sun were quite faint and always disappeared with the next sun drying experience.

After we started solids I started using flushable liners and they've done the job quite nicely. Occasionally we forget to put a liner in and it is no big deal, just need to dry in the sun after they've been washed. We have a little squirt though so we can rinse out most of the poo stains before they set!

Cloth all the way! Once you've cleaned sticky poo off with cloth and then have to do it with a disposable bum wipe, you'll be absolutely convinced of the superiority of cloth!
I got my MIL to make me wipes with terry on one side & flannellette on the other for a bit of polishing at the end. I use sorbolene with them and find it gets evrything off and keeps her bum moisturised.

Going against the grain here... and using disposable wipes for DS2... I have the gaia baby ones, and yes they are a bit $$ but I am finding them easy and convenient in these early days. And so far, have been gentle on his skin. They say they are bamboo and biodegradable...

For DS1 I use foaming cleanser (cushie tushies), and will use that on DS2 soon. And I just have the cheapo face washers, but also use tissues if there is just a wee... I am a bit slack really....

I use cloth wipes. The pea pods ones are good (even though pea pod nappies aren't).

I just have a pile of wipes and a spray bottle with water by the change table. I think I have 10 wipes and I wash every second day.

I use flushable liners and find them excellent. You can wash and reuse them if they are just wet. I just chuck them in the wash with the rest of the nappies.

Also, it is the norm for all water that goes down drains in houses to go to sewer. Someone mentioned about septic tanks and using the laundry sink... So whether you flush down the toilet or wash down the laundry sink, kitchen sink, shower, etc, it will end up in the sewer. The issues I see are introducing germs and causing clogs. But rinsing newborn poo down the laundry sink should be fine.

That was me :lol: we have absolutely no town connections out here well except for electricity and phones but yeah for people on town supply dunny is the best place for baby poo's. we need to clean everything fairly frequently because of our water so not too worried about germs etc either. ;);)

We didn't bother with liners while DD was NB - they soaked through the liners to the nappy. However we now use the flushables ones and they work pretty well.

As for wipes, for a wee, we use the cheapo ones (think the brand is Big Softies) from safeway (probably the same as the ones from BigW). For a Poo, we use the velour Itti Bitti ones with the BubbleBubs foaming wipes wash, which works really well for us. Depending on how messy she is, we can use anywhere from 1-3 wipes.

We just brought a whole heap of plain white face washers to use as wipes (that way they look different from any other face washers we own).
We usually only need to use one per nappy change (2 for a bad one!) and we just keep a bowl of water on a shelf to use with the face washers. Afterwards, the face washer is just thrown in the nappy bucket and washed and dried with all the MCN's.
As for liners, I just brought a metre of micropolar fleece material from Spotlight for $7 and cut them into strips so that they can be re-used and washed with the MCN's as well. I don't think liners are absolutely essential but I like using them because it helps to prevent nappy rash for my son :)

We don't bother with liners, it doesn't seem to make much difference to her skin.
Cloth wipes are easy with cloth nappies, you just chuck them in the nappy pail and don't have to fuss around with putting a poopy wipe in a plastic bag for the bin! Same when I'm out, I throw the wipe inside the nappy, fold it so the inside doesn't smear my nappy bag, and in the bag. No fuss.
At home we have a container of plain water next to her change table - we dip the wipes in just before using and change the water every day or so to prevent stuff growing in it. Plain water is by far the best thing for bums. When out, I have the water in a little spray bottle - I spray her bum, then wipe with dry cloth.
We used disposable nappies & wipes while driving to and from Canberra over summer - and I have to say cloth comes out far superior. You need so many more sposie wipes to clean off poo; we usually only need one cloth wipe, or two for a biggie. I have 24 of the cheap sort you can buy at Target and Big W, plus some nice bamboo ones to dry her wet bum afterwards. We only run out when I leave half of them in the nappy bag :)
